On my recent trip from Australia to Italy I have booked this apartment through a website and had the worst experience a tourist can encounter when overseas.
To start with I had to wait for long time for the owner/manager to actually show up only to tell me that accommodation was not available. I had an alternative one that night and it was pretty good. When I returned to Via Canova 12 the day after, I found the place unliveable. It was filthy, smelly with dirty wet cloths dumped in the cupboards, rotting furniture in the shower/toilet room. Toilet bowl, mirrors, floor, shower curtain were in a condition absolutely unacceptable. I tried to clean it myself, but the toilet brush was broken, there were no cloths etc. After all it was not my job!!! I paid $90 euros a night for this dump, where pots and pans were dirty, table broken, TV did not work, and bed linen was stained with blood. It is a very noisy place, facing the street where the major hospital is situated and the motorbike car park is right beneath the windows. I could not open the window for fresh air because of exhaust fumes and engine noise all the time. I stayed awake all night that night and in the morning moved to the hotel, for which I paid $120 Euros with white towels, sparkling bathroom with a bath, bidet and granite bench, serviced e3very day, breakfast included, free internet, all tourist information and help available, around the corner from Spanish steps.

The apartment at Via Canova 12 is not safe for living, in case of emergency you can be trapped upstairs, the stairway is very narrow. This place requires major refurbishing, but in fact does not qualify for tourist accommodation whatsoever. I lost a lot of money through this, feel ripped off and have shocking memories of my first days in Rome. I am going to continue with my mission of warning tourist about and against booking accommodation through certain websites.

It's a sweet little hostel with these self-contained apartment suites you can rent, we're in a 3-bedroom unit with Jen's parents and it's pretty sweet having a kitchen as food's really expensive here.  Actually everything's really expensive here, I'll stop complaining about Vancouver… Rome calling
