The Salar de Uyuni, a salt desert is located in southwestern Bolivia. It used to be an inland sea or water lake. All that remains is the salt.
By bus and train, tourists, the majority international backpackers, make their way to the dusty town of Uyuni where travelers join tours. It is also possible to enter the Salar (desert) from Chilenian side - St. Pedro de Atacama (also beautiful city). There are different agencies - most offers for the standard three or four day tours that explore the Salar and the windswept, Martian landscape beyond. It is possible, for a price, to design a private tour: camping, longer excursions, translators, even transfers into northern Chile can be arranged. If you are comming from La Paz you can allready arrange everything there (we payed for 3 days and all transfers 65 USD and we went to Vhile after the tour). the drivers are... multitalented - he drives, cooks, reapir car on every stop, party and of course - guides! it is almost immposible to describe the beauty of nature of each part of the salty desert. The fields of salt are magnificant, colorful flamingos , dusty road, mountains beyond and flat land - like earth and heaven, vulcanos, lakes!!! i will upload some pictures - they might tell more :) anyhow, it is tho most interesting landscape on earth i've ever seen |

Decided upon a 1-day trip, which included travelling across the salty desert and back and going back to La Paz in the evening. Uyuni is a crap town, only erected to provide a starting point for the tourist on their salty desert trips. If you´re into John-Wayne movies, then you probably know… Day 13.
