It's fine to travel alone. My Turkish is god awful and I was able to manage navigating the city by myself. I never felt threatened. People are very nice and eager to give you directions. Like any large city be careful at night and do some research into the neighborhoods you plan on visiting.

im living in turkey since 6 years now.
Never experiensed anything dangerous.
Ofcours like other country you still have to be carefull but u will be safe to travel alone:)
