I hate having plans when I travel but I make some exceptions and this day was one of those. Often when I travel I make it a point to watch some hockey and I made plans to do this in Japan. You may be surprised but there is professional hockey in Japan. The pro hockey league in Japan may not rival the NHL but it was not the worst hockey I have ever seen. The game I chose ot watch was between a team from Tokyo and another team from Sapporo and they played at Shin-Yokohama's Prince Hotel Skate Center.

The play on the ice is not what I remember though. Before the game I stood beside an American, who was working for the Sapporo team, and we talked about the fact that the NHL was still on strike. I think he was just happy to get some hockey news from North America. Our tickets placed us directly behind one of the nets and because of the design of the rink we were basically right over the goalie at that end.

One of the funniest things I have ever seen at a hockey rink occurred here. During the game one of the Plexiglas sections cracked and a small piece broke off. This type of thing happens semi often even in the big stadiums over here but how they chose to try to fix it was a novel if somewhat dangerous. The staff came out with a ladder and I expected them to take out the broken section and place a new one in. However one guy climbed the ladder and had another hand him the broken piece of glass. They then pulled out a roll of what looked to be electrical tape and tried to tape it together. As soon as the referee saw what was happening he quickly skated over and using a bit of broken Japanese and simple English (I think he was American) he told them to change the glass. Even at the smallest rink in Canada I can not imagine the local rink manager thinking he could just tape broken glass back together and consider it safe.

Between periods I use to going to get a burger and a beer from the food stand. If it is a modern NHL rink maybe I will grab a pizza or even some BBQ chicken. It of course was much different at this rink. The food was supplied by the hotel that the rink is part of so it was much better then I expected. The food was not surprisingly full on Japanese. I think I had udon noodles and a green tea. Novel experience to be slurping noodle while watching live hockey.

Even before the game we had a strange experience. As we walked from the local JR subway station we suddenly realized we were surrounded by many white people wearing strange jerseys and they were not speaking English. As we were way early for the game we followed them and discovered that soccer team from South America was playing another team from Europe in some sort of club championship at a nearby stadium (International Stadium Yokohama). After walking around the outside the stadium we headed to our game in the much smaller hockey stadium.

The next day we did head into the huge city of Tokyo. However Akiko does not really like Tokyo, I think it has to be with be from Osaka, so we did not stay long. We did try to get a look at the Emperor's Palace but it was not possible so we just walked around the nice park that surrounds the palace. We also found the rink my local hockey team played in, a few years earlier, which really is Yoyogi Swimming Pool.
I was so lucky to find this Chinese Restraunt. Once you enter you welcome by friendly staff and the view of the restraunt is very beauitful. Your first given Jasmin Tea with a nice warm wash cloth to wash your hands. The menu is both in Japanese and English. I ordered roast duck, sharkfin dumbling, fried rice with shimp, fried crab leg. I must say it was the best food I had tasted in a long time. The duck was great and the crab leg was so delicious. I highly recommend trying this restraunt. Although somewhat expensive, some items on the menu are very reasonable, it just depends on your taste and how much your willing to spend.

Landmark Tower is the best place to visit when you in Yokohama. It's the tallest and fastest building in Japan. Not only do you get to see a great view of yokohama at night from the 69th floor, you also get a chance to see one of the best looking buildings that thats tons of shopping centers. One a clear day you can see Mt. Fuji from this building and also you can see Yokohama Bay bridge. The cost to get to the top is only 1,000 yen which is about 9 dollars per person. Once inside the elevator you will race up to the 69th floor in about 40 seconds. The max speed is about 750 meters per seconds. Once there you will get a complete 360 degree of yokohama. There's food and entertainment once you arrive at the sky garden. If you go at night it can enjoy a nice relaxing time sitting in the comfortable chairs over looking the view. Once you get off the elevator to the left they have on the floor a projection of the traffic below very cool especially at night. The great thing about the Landmark building is after you wonderful view of yokohama you can choose many of the great restaurant or you can leave the building and across the way is Hard Rock Cafe.

JAPAN DAY 1
[THURSDAY/FRIDAY]

jeff dropped me off at logan at 6am so i could catch my flight to chicago. i thought it would take a long time to go through all the lines to catch my flight, but it didn`t in fact it took less than an hour. i then waited for my flight at 9am. i talked to jeff and my parents before boarding the flight, i was so nervous!!. the plane was small really small and it was a full flight but thankfully one of the only empty seats was right next to me!! the flight from boston to chicago seemed really short [at least that part was .. ha] when i got to chicago the airport was easier to navigate than i thought so i got to the japan airlines counter in less than an hour as well. i called jeff at the airport before my flight and called my friend yui to make sure she knew which gate to pick me up from. once i boarded the flight there was an american guy sitting next to me, i was happy because he`d been to japan before so we talked the whole 14 hr flight ... it didn`t really make it any shorter but at least i wasn`t sitting staring at the moniter the whole time. they also had movies on the flight, i watched shrek 3. i couldn`t sleep even though most of the flight they had the shades and lights down. too nervous and excited!! about an hour before we landed i got really nervous again .. i started to get a headache too. i mean it dawned on me i am not in america anymore .. omg i am going to a country where i do not know the language and is thousands of miles from my home ... :P i still felt nervous when we got off the plane but i was so happy, there where all these signs saying "welcome to japan" .. yay i was finally here! it was really confusing and there were so many people in the airport so i followed the american guy i`d met on the plane since he knew where we were going. i had to go through like 3 check in things before i was finally able to go to the luggage pickup room. well the round thing came around like 3 times before i realised ... omg where is my luggage? i asked one of the workers and she told me that they`d have to fill out a lost luggage report and would call me at my residence in japan once they located it ... you can imagine what i was thinking!! thankfully the lady was very nice [as are people in general in japan] and she called my friend to explain the situation and guide me to where she was waiting for me. it was weird seeing my friend after 2 years but in a good way, she looked pretty much the same, her mother was also there and i got to meet her as well, her mom is really pretty and really nice. when my friend, yui told me we were driving back to her house i was so happy!! i was not looking forward to riding a train or a subway back to her house after a long flight like that. the drive from narita airport to yokohama is a 2 hour ride. we caught up on the ride back to her house. while looking out the window and seeing all the signs in kanji it dawned on me ... wow i`m really here!! we got to her house and i settled in for a while, japanese homes are very different than american ones, taller rather than long as the case seems to be everywhere in japan. japanese showers though are the hardest adjustment, i had heard about the use of japanese bathrooms in the past before, of course but to actually be in one is a different story, haha. the one funny thing is that the toilet and the shower are in different rooms, i didn`t expect that. after showering and borrowing a shirt from my friend we headed out so i could pick up some toiletries for the next day. i went into my first japanese mall and likes the homes it was long, instead of having 1 or 2 floors like in america there were around 6 with only 4~5 stores on each floor. after shopping we went to eat sushi!! yay sushi my first night in japan. the sushi resturaunt had a revolving counter which had the sushi on it, you just grab the plate you want and the color of the plate corresponds to the price. i`d seen this once on the travel chanell but it`s much cooler in real life. with your sushi you got this huge and i mean huge bowl of miso .. i could only keep down 1/2 the contents of the bowl. the sushi here is so much better than back home in the u.s ... how will i go back to the stuff at home? after eating it hit me that i haden`t slept in almost 2 days and i was exausted so once we got back to her house i went into my futon ^^ and fell right to sleep.

I woke up and got ready and had a really good lunch [which consisted of like noodles, rice balls, and this sause which was really good and I need to get the name of]. While I was eating I watched "Fever Pitch" which is a really good movie, I recommend it. Yui didn`t come back from work until around 5PM and after she got home she wanted to watch the movie she`d rented "Monster In-Law" .. I`d seen it before but a long while ago, it was hilarious. We then went downstairs and watched T.V there was this very funny J-Drama on about a dad and a daughter who switch bodies. I really want to watch it subbed.

JAPAN - DAY 19
[TUESDAY]

So I thought today was going to be another do-nothing day [which I didn`t want haha, I hate sitting around doing nothing becuase it`s Japan!! for one, I have a limited time here, & i`ll start thinking about missing Jeff too :P] Haha but around 5 Yui said we should get ready because we were going to her boyfriends house to clean it [trust me it was MESSY when we went there a few days earlier ... like MESSY]. I was happy becuase it was something to do. Her mother came home around 6 and drove us to the subway station. We stopped at a 7-11 convienence store and bought some dinners to bring to his house since we didn`t feel like cooking. When we got to his house Yui said I didn`t have to clean [thank god since it would be kind of weird to pick up someone elses boyfriends`s dirty underwear, yuck haha. Half the time she wasn`t cleaning either because we where chatting the whole time but she got a majority of the mess cleaned up. We called his cell when we got there to let him know we where in his apartment & that if a neighbor called the cops asking why 2 girls where alone in his apartment that he coulod vouch for us, haha. But yeah we wanted him to get us some fruity mixed drinks when we came back from work but he ended up having to stay late so we had to leave before :[ So yeap we went back to Yui`s around 10PM then you know the rest ^^

JAPAN - DAY 20
[WEDNESDAY]

Shopping again !! [Didn`t I tell you they love it?]. Anyways Yui woke me up at 10AM to tell me to get ready since we where heading out before she went to work. After I showered and got dressed and stuff we headed out on the bus and subway to the Yokohama shopping district. Guess who came with us, haha ... nah Yui's boyfriends cool so I don`t mind him hanging out all the time, not like I have a say anyways. But yeap we shopped, basically I didn`t buy anything but we ate at that Cafe where I`d had the Korean pancake before, this time I ordered Pasta with Egg ... weird combination, but in Japan they seem to love Eggs of pretty much everything, it was good .. it sort of tasted like Mac&Cheese. We also had Strawberry pasteries & tea at this other Cafe place, it was REALLY good, and it better be for $1,000\ After shopping around some more Yui had to head off to work. Her boyfriend took a different sunway then us since he didn`t have to go to work. I got off 2 stops before her, and this was now my second trip on the bus by myself, I got back to her house safely ... Thank You ^^ Yui got home late, 9:30PM. I started watching this Taiwanese Drama "Smiling Pasta" it`s pretty funny but the girl in it tries too hard to be cute and her voice is somewhat annoying.

JAPAN - DAY 21
[THURSDAY]

Yui & I hung around most of the morning after getting ready for the day. Nothing exciting happened until her boyfriend came over around 3PM. They went upstairs while I was eating lunch, & since I didn`t feel like walking in on them having sex or something [sorry for being graphic, haha] I waited until Yui came downstairs [which was something like 2 hours later] all of which time i`d been watching a horror film. When she came downstairs it was to ask if i`d like to go out for dinner, der yeah & it ended up being THE BEST dinner ever. We went to this place around Yui`s house, a Japanese BBQ place. It was dark and relaxing inside. They had these tables where there`s raised Tatami mats so you`re basically kneeling at the table [well until our knees started hurting and we sat on our butts, haha]. Like all Asian BBQs there was a grill in the center [this was was different in that it wasn`t a built in grill]. We had tons of beef and soups and our fruit mixed drink!! haha. Pineapple, it was sooo good ... yeah they don`t really card in Japan which is TOTALLY different than the U.S thank you. I was fine with my 1 drink, not even tipsy but Yui was almost completely gone after 1/2 a drink, she slept some at the table, so her boyfriend and I ate most of the food, haha. She woke up cohearent after a while, but yeah i`m glad I don`t go down that fast. But yeah the food was amazing, the bill came up to around $60 .. so roughly $20 each which for the meal I didn`t mind paying. We even managed to stuff down some dessert which I almost never do. After dinner we went back to her place completely satisfied and slept, which everyone should know how good it feels to sleep after a large/delicious meal ... it was like Thanksgiving.

JAPAN DAY 2
[SATURDAY]

Even though i haden`t slept in 2 days i still woke up at 6am. I tried going back to sleep but no luck. I waited up until 9:30 then couldn`t take it anymore and woke up my friend. We went downstairs and had breakfast/lunch. We had fruit and these brown noodles with pork in them. I usually dislike noodles in the states but these were soooo good. We watched T.V while we ate which is quite an experience in you don`t speak japanese. After we ate we got ready and went out to buy some snacks. OMG is it hot and humid in japan ... I wa sso glad when we got back to her house. We watched the movie Freaky Friday .. basically all the movies here are either American or Korean. I talked to Jeff on the phone and it felt so good to hear his voice ... I still miss him so much D: I also called my parents. I miss them too. We then got ready to go to the fireworks in Tokyo. We wore Yutaka`s which are japanese summer kimono. It took a long time to get to the fireworks site. First we took a bus, then a long subway ride into Tokyo!!On the way there thought there were so many people that I almost passed out from the heat so we had to get out of the subway for a while. I caught my first glimpse of Tokyo at Shibuya station at that big intersection you always see on T.V. We then took another subway to the fireworks ... When we got there we met Yui`s friend. She was nice and spoke a little english. It was quite good considering she`d never been to an english speaking country before. The major thing i noticed was that japanese fireworks are like 2 hours straight while American ones are like 30 mins max. We ate yakatori which is chicken skin, which sounds gross but its really good. We left early as to avoid the large crowds that would be at the end. I fell asleep on the subway, when we got back to the house I just took a shower than went straight to sleep ... I was so tired.

JAPAN DAY 3
[SUNDAY]

I woke up at 6am again this morning. BUT thankfully fell asleep again until 9. I waited for Yui to wake up and it was 11 by that time .... for lunch we had Chinese style cold noodles with egg, cucumbers, and some red things ... haha don`t know the name of them. Yet again I was amazed that the noodles where actually good ... what`s up with noodles in the U.S? After lunch we went out shooping this time to rent some movies to watch. We rented 4 movies [Princess Diaries 2, Charlie and the Choc factory, The devil wears Prada, and Click] we also did some food shopping and I got a notebook and stickers at the Sanrio store. It`s much cheaper to buy that kind ｆof stuff here than in the states. When we got back to her house we decided to eat then watch the Princess Diaries 2. We then had dinner which was pretty much spaghetti with tomatoe sauce but with shrimp. After dinner we watched The devil wears Prada but I fell asleep in the middle of it. After the movie my friend woke me up and I went to sleep.

JAPAN - DAY 30

WOW it`s September?? This trip`s gone by faster than I thought it would, REALLY fast in fact. Gah I love Japan.

So today I woke up and all the usual stuff. Around 2 Yui and I got ready and headed to Nippa station which is a different one than we usually go to. We walked around there and then met her boyfriend. We then headed off to this like rec room to play ping pong, OLD SCHOOL!! haha. It reminded me of a high-school like old with really ugly aqua colored walls. There were a few other people playing but there were like 6 tables so you know the place had seen better days. I felt like time warped back to the 80s or something. Ping Pong was fun though, I didn`t do so well since the only time i`ve ever played was like in my cousins basement, and that was years ago. I mean come on, who really plays ping pong? The Japanese I suppose, haha. Yui and her boyfriend went to get a drink and I was still in the room when this old man came in and started shutting off the lights, then he noticed me and said something and left, I was like wtf? haha. When they came back we played some more and then we went to the upstairs part which was a library. No english books of course, ZzZzZzzzz Yui and her boyfriend played some boardgame [XTRA OLD SCHOOL!!] which i never heard of before. I just watched since I didn`t get the game at all, I kind of got the point of it though after watching 3 games. There`s black and white checker like pieces and you have to make it so your opponent can`t make a move, .. something like that. There was mostly little kids in there but some other teenagers playing the boardgame and some adults studying. [middle and high-school kids go back monday]. After we went across the street to this grocery store and Yui bought some ramen. We then went upstairs which was like a childrens place with all kids clothes and toys and baby things. We walked around looking at all the baby stuff, haha IDK why to pass time I guess, DEFF not thinking about any babies, gah. They had some really cute things there though, I bought Disney Princess bandaids! yay!! haha only $3 and I have blisters all over my feet so I needed them anyways. After spending some time there we went back downstairs and Yui`s mom was there, we shopped around with her and then we went back to the house. After eating dinner we went out again with her mom to this shopping mall which looked like a typical US shopping mall, most of the stores where expensive ones like Armani Exchange & Lacoste ... they had a movie theature in there too, fist one i`ve seen in Japan. We went into this store that sold puppies and like just about everything for dogs, people PAMPER their dogs here they just love them, they have all these cute little clothes for them and jewled collers and shampoos and even like doggie strollers, haha it`s so cute, dogs really are babies here. I think Yui`s family is getting a dog since her mom really wants one, she even bought a book on different type of dogs. Wish I could be here when they will get one! I bought some earphones for my IPOD since mine have been broken for the longest time and i`ve just been too lazy to get new ones. After the mall closed we went to the movie rental place and I rented this movie about Snow White but with eal people, I might watch it tonight. We then went to the convenience store and I bought a snack, and now here I am typing this ^^.
