Rafting in the Smokey Mountains is a terrific experince that can't be passed if you are in the area. The Nantahala River is a smaller river, not too rough for inexperienced rafters or those who enjoy kyaking. There are a couple of class 3 rapids and one or two class 4 rapids. For the most part though, it is a very relaxing trip down the river. There are places to jump out of the boat and float around to cool off and just enjoy the clear river water.

The absolute BEST part of the rafting experience though is the scenery. You are making your way through the Nantahala Gorge in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountians National Park. Lush green folliage surrounds you and the air is fresh and crisp. If you go early in the morning, the river is covered by a fine mist.

As far as finding a rafting company, the Nantahala Outdoor Center is the biggest company in the gorge. I have personally never rafted with them but many of my friends have and they recommend the company. The only company I raft with when I vist family is called Brookside. It is a smaller company that also runs a campground if you are in the mood for a little mountian camping. I highly recommend Brookside.

Christmas Eve we lounged around the house and then went for a hke in the mountains.
Craig, Amie, Luke, Pancake, and I drove down to Appletree Campground
and hiked up into the mountains. It was good to get out and get
the blood flowing. We returned to the cabin that evening for soup
and the Flacons game. The Falcons lost, but the highlight of the
day was giving Logan his Michael Vick jersey.
We woke up Monday morning with a white day-after Christmas. It
was beautiful to see the mountains covered in snow.
Unfortunately, Amie and I had to get back to work. So, we loaded
up the truck and headed back to town.
