Sema Wilkes took over this boarding house in 1943. Her goal was to make a living serving meals to her boarders. After she stopped housing the boarders she started serving lunch to the public in her downstairs dining room. The menu always has fried chicken/sausage and beef stew. With those main dishes you have about 9+ side dishes. Those side dishes range from mac and cheese, candied yams, collard greens, tomatoes, pickled beets, black eyed peas, and other delicious seasonal veggies. And for dessert you might have banana pudding or berry cobbler.
When you arrive at Mrs. Wilkes you will be seated at a huge table and you will be served family style. The table seats approx 10-12 people, so you'll make new friends that are visiting Mrs. Wilkes house too!
ps. CASH ONLY

The Roundhouse Railroad Museum had its origins back in 1838. No, it wasn’t a museum in those days. It was the beginnings of the Central Georgia Railway. It was built to transport cotton the 190 miles from Savannah to Macon. And it continued to do so through 1963. Today it contains the oldest and most complete repair shop in the U. S. Also at the museum you will find a working turntable, a 125 foot restored industrial smokestack, and HO scale model railroad of Savannah, a shaft and belt driven machinery exhibit, the oldest portable steam engine in the U. S., a nice selection of rolling stock, a video presentation, and a museum shop. The entry fee quite minimal.

My husband and I ate here since a friend we were visiting insisted on this location. I waited 2 hours in line while my husband spent most of the time at an Irish pub next door.

The place was crowded so we sat at the bar. The bartender was nice, that was a plus. I chose the buffet. The menu was pretty simple, something like meatloaf and collard greens. I do remember having really bland mac and cheese. It was a home cooked meal that tasted nothing like moms.

Well, the big deal with this place is that it is owned by Paula Deen. I will never wait for more than 1 hour for a meal. Maybe if Tyler Florence is actually cooking the meal, then I may consider it.

So, in short . . . a line spanning over 3 blocks, ordinary foods with bland flavors, high prices, and a high noise level are not worth it, personally speaking.

It's a clean, well maintained hotel but the location and the staff make it unsafe . . .

We stayed here 1 night before the St Patrick's Day weekend of 2006. We went out to a late dinner and got back to the hotel around 11pm. I went to the jeep around 8am and noticed the small window in the back door on the passenger side was broken into. We parked in the back since it was closer to our room. That may have been a reason why our vehicle was targeted.

The cop that took our report said it was not the first time he was called to that hotel. He once chased a guy who had some sort of drugs on him. The cop also mentioned that he believes one of the hotel employees was either a part of it or did the job her/himself.

Although there have been many incidents at this property, management has not installed any security cameras. The lighting was not very good in the back.

I give it 1 star because I would not recommend this location to anyone.

The Gryphon Tea Room is like stepping into a bit of "Breakfest at Tiffanys". They are open for late lunch and afternoon tea($15) and they have a list of tea. I love to get the tea sandwichs and a pot of exotic dream tea. The Gryphon is set in an old pharmacy and is a relaxed place. It should make it on the top 5 places to go.

Now on to Savannah for some real Historic homes. One different kind of place first though. I had to stop and get a picture or two of the storage tank in southern Savannah that is painted to resemble the earth. Yep, a large round tank painted to look just like it. Even the mail box!!

Savannah has so many great old homes and churches it was impossible to get all of them on film. No place to park or stop, and even if we had taken a tour ride, the huge trees cover so much of the squares and front areas it would have been hard to get good pics. I did what I could and will post a few. Judy even had a chance to get a picture of Lady and Sons restaurant. That’s Paula Dean’s place, she’s the fun southern Chef from television.

We also had time to take in the Roundhouse Railroad Museum. Lots of pics there. This is a pretty large facility and it took us quite some time to cover it. But I have always loved trains so it was one of my "can’t miss" places.

Savannah, Georgia>, Nov 14, 2007

Axel and our son, Erik, took five days in November of 2007 and moved the boat up to a marina on the Savannah River, in Georgia, near Savannah. It was hauled out for dry storage. Now, it's April and Axel's with the boat once again for three weeks of working on it. There is some leaking into the interior from the deck that he wants to repair. Also, he wants to find out about getting a repair done to a small section of the aluminum hull. So, here I am, finishing out my last month of my teaching career. The weather is COLD and SNOWY for April. Yesterday morning it was back down to zero at our house, colder in other locations in Fairbanks. Snow covers the world still, no break up happening yet. Meanwhile, Axel is in shorts and sandals, enjoying the high 70's and mild nights, while he... oh,yeah.... he IS working! He borrowed lots of tools from my brother, Jack, in Orlando, and hopes to get lots done in preparation for next winter's travels to the Bahamas and ..... maybe elsewhere.

This restaurant is located in the historic district by the river. A real Irish pub, we make it a point to have dinner here and sometimes a snack on a second day.

There is entertainment every night. The last time we were at this place, Harry O'Donoghue was performing. It was late on a weekday so the place was not crowded at all. It was great listening to some of his Irish Folk Songs over a tasty Corned Beef on Rye. And of course, my husband had a Black and Tan with it. It was heaven for him.

They also serve several Irish fares such as Irish Potato Soup, Irish Beef Stew, and Corned Beef and Cabbage to name a few. Now that's a real Irish place. There's even an Irish Whiskey Cake.

Stop by here at night and enjoy some live Irish tunes and flavorsome Irish foods.

This place is my preference when in town. Great food, friendly staff and cool decor.

An old cotton warehouse, it was converted into a restaurant. It has a resident ghost that dwells in the storage room where he enjoys rum.

Their specialty is seafood. I always have the Pine Bark Stew. It contains Flounder, Shrimp, Oysters, Crab & Scallops with potatoes served in a kettle. I like the kettle idea :-)

They have a good dessert selection. Their beer choices are average. They have nothing here for a Half and Half or a Black and Tan. They also have a small Champagne list.

When you visit, watch out for the ghost. He has never been out when I went there for lunch. You might see him during dinner.

Savannah is a nice town, however, it appears that there is still a lot of work to do before it will be truely beautiful. Half of the houses are in a really bad shape and in desperate need of renovation. Nevertheless, a stroll through the city along the alleys, underneath old trees covered with Spanish moss and squares with statues and fountains is a good experience.

The riverside has shops and restaurants and has a comfortably touristy atmosphere. A peculiar detail is that the city lies about two storeys higher than the river. Bridges connect the upper floors of the buildings along the river to the city level and stairs lead down to the riverside.
