They don’t call it the Icefields Parkway for nothing.  The day was cloudy as we closed down the trailer and started off to enjoy the scenery along the Icefields Parkway to make our way to Jasper.  As we headed north the clouds thickened and rain showers threatened.  We needed gas so we stopped in Lake Louise and found gas at $1.39/L. That is over $5 a gallon. Ouch!  Then we entered the Parkway.  Our first stop was Bow Lake and Glacier.  The beautiful blue lake was still frozen is some areas and the mountain tops along the parkway are covered with fresh snow. 

Next we decided to take the hike (up a walking path) to Peyto Lake.  To get there we crossed what is called a “snow forest,” which smelled just like Christmas, and there was still about a foot of snow on the ground.  It can snow any day of the year there and today was not exception.  It flurried while we were there.  Peyto is a glacier fed lake and is a beautiful dark turquoise blue.  We then we farther up the trail to Bow Summit, the highest point you can reach on the Icefields Parkway at 7000 feet.  Unfortunately we were not dressed for winter.  It was cold.

Our next stops were at Waterfowl Lakes, Cirrus Mountain, Bridal Veil Fall, and Parker Ridge. 

Then we arrived at the Columbia Icefields, which gives the parkway its name.  We went out to the Athabasca glacier, another cold place. 

As we traveled we passed several groups of big horn sheep, one of which was posing cooperatively along the side of the road. 

We made one last stop as we made our way to Jasper, at Tangle Falls.  On the northern end of the parkway, the Endless Chain which is the longest unbroken sting of mountains in the Canadian Rockies stretches along the side of the road.

We had just about every weather condition possible as we made our way up the parkway, blue skies, rain, snow and sleet.

Tomorrow we will spend the day exploring the northern end of the parkway from Jasper.  We are still hoping for better weather.

On a recent trip to the beautiful Canadian Rockies, I decided to stay at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. This hotel is situated a couple of km's outside the town of Jasper, therefore giving it a bit of a secluded feeling. I like hotels which are a bit out of town as it gives you some space to get away from it all. Check in was fast and very effective. One has the option of either booking a regular room or a cabin style room. The cabins are situated all over the property with different cabins giving you different views. Finding parking was not difficult at all, as the lodge has ample parking. The room that I selected was very clean, and had all the amenities that one could expect from a five star resort. Room Service was very efficient, and the servers were some of the friendliest I have ever met. Overall, I have no complaints about the JPL, and would definately encourage anyone looking to pamper themselves to give JPL a try. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

On July 8^th, we had a long driving day. Until the 17^th, we will have to drive a lot. Today, we drove 13 and a half hour. Up here, it rarely ever goes dark, so you don’t have to worry about driving in the dark. We went from Jasper to Dawson Creek. By the time we got to the campground, it was too late to do anything.

Today we drove along the Icefields Highway, the 93, to Jasper. The Icefields Parkway is a spectacular 230 km long road between Lake Louise and Jasper. On our way we passed, and of course stopped, at a lot of beautifull sites.

The first one we reached was the Crowfoot Glacier. A century ago, the glacier had three 'toes' of ice. Since then the glacier has melted back and the lower toe has been lost. The middle toe is disappearing too.

Next we passed Bow Pass, 'Bow Summit', the highest road pass in the four mountain parks at 2.088 m above sea level. After a short walk we reach a fantastic viewpoint on Peyto Lake. The lake looks brilliantly turquoise.

Third on our list was Mistaya Canyon. A deep canyon worn out by the water with a natural arch on the canyon walls. The photo's we took do not look so great, but in real life it is realy beautifull.

After a tankstop at Saskatchewan Crossing, the only gasstation between Lake Louise and Jasper, we drove to the Columbia Icefield. Overthere we took a motorized tour to the glacier. We stayed a while on the glacier, drink a bit of glacier water, and head back to the visitor's center at the foot of the glacier. Although, the foot of the glacier a century ago. Now the foot of the glacier is far away from the visitor's center as you can see on the photo.

Before reaching Jasper we passed, and stopped at a few falls. First Sunwapta Falls, named of the Stoney Indian term 'Sunwapta', meaning 'turbulunt river'. Next was Athabasca Falls, a 23 metre waterfall wich has the most powerful flow to be found anywhere in the mountain parks. Due to this flow. When we reached our hotel it was already getting dark.

Lake Louise and the treasures of Jasper National Park took hours to explore, yet only the surface was touched.

If you pick up any calendar of the Canadian Rockies, you will be sure to see a photo of Maligne Lake and Spirit Island inside, if not on the cover. Maligne Lake is located 40km SE of the Jasper townsite in Alberta Canada, and has a shuttle service from the town if needed. To get out to the site of the famous photograph, you can hike in or take a tour boat, which is well worth the $47/person. ($23.50/child) As you take the boat ride down the lake, you begin to see the changing color of the water into the beautiful bluish green. You are allowed to get off the boat near spirit island, but it is not allowed to walk on the island itself. Maligne Lake is also a popular fishing destination by canoe.

Mitten in der Nacht gingen plötzlich die Lichter an, offenbar war das Problem in der Stromversorgung behoben. Morgens haben wir erfahren, daß das eigentlich ganz normal sei und öfter vorkomme, besonders natürlich bei Schlechtwetter. Dieses war allerdings vorbei, heute war endlich wieder blauer Himmel angesagt. So sind wir relativ früh aufgestanden und nachdem wir alles eingepackt hatten, haben wir all jene Orte aufgesucht, die wir schon vorgestern als ideale Fotopunkte ausgekundschaftet hatten. Allerdings war heute alles in eine dicke weiße Schneeschicht gehüllt. Zuerst sind wir zu den beiden Seen, Two Jack Lake und Minnewanka Lake, gefahren. Offenbar war noch niemand vor uns hier, denn der Schnee am Parkplatz war noch völlig unberührt und so konnten wir ein paar schöne Fotos im Schnee machen.

Auch zu den Bow River Falls sind wir nocheinmal gefahren. Der Schnee am Parkplatz war schon von zahlreichen Besuchern zusammengetreten. Der Wasserfall ist nicht hoch, aber liegt malerisch und breit an einer Flußbiegung im Tal. Hier hat sich die Sonne wieder kurz gezeigt und so waren der beleuchtete Wasserfall und die Bäume und Steine unter der Schneedecke ein schöner Anblick, den wir ausgiebig genossen haben. Unmittelbar darüber liegt das Fairmont Hotel, das wir schon vorgestern aus der Ferne gesehen haben. Der Bau stammt aus dem 19. Jahrhundert und sieht aus wie ein riesiger Palast. Das Gebäude wollten wir uns auch noch bei schönem Wetter ansehen. Im Süden Banffs liegen ein paar kleine Seen, die wir auch noch aufsuchen wollten. Auf der kurzen Fahrt dorthin wurde es deutlich wärmer und der nachts gefallene Neuschnee ist in Bächen dahingeschmolzen. Diese kleinen Seen sind offenbar ein Paradies für Natur- und Vogelbeobachter, von denen wir einige angetroffen haben.

Dann haben wir uns auf den Weg nach Lake Louise gemacht, dorthin haben wir eine Nebenstraße genommen, den Bow Valley Parkway, der uns als Einstimmung für unser heutiges Tagesziel schon einige wunderbare Ausblicke auf die Rocky Mountains gegeben hat. Zuerst haben wir aber noch beim Lake Louise, einem der wohl beeindruckendsten Seen der Rocky Mountains, einen Fotostop eingelegt. Der See liegt in einem tiefen Tal, beiderseits und dahinter erheben sich hohe Berge. Der See war noch zugefroren und dank des Schneefalls der letzten Nacht war statt des Sees nur eine große weiße Fläche zu sehen, die aber durch ihre Größe und Lage nicht minder faszinierend war. Nur das nördliche Ende des Sees ziert auch hier ein riesiger Hotelpalast, der allerdings bei weitem häßlicher war als jener in Banff.

In Lake Louise beginnt auch der "Icefield Parkway", von dem wir vorgestern schon ein wenig bei Schlechtwetter gesehen haben. Heute allerdings ist der angeblich schönste Highway Nordamerikas diesem Titel durchaus gerecht geworden. Beiderseits der Straße waren immer wieder hohe Bergspitzen zu sehen, deren frisches Weiß in den blauen Himmel geleuchtet hat - dazwischen immer wieder Flüsse und Seen, in denen sich dieselben gespiegelt haben. Unterwegs haben wir Bergziegen angetroffen, die auf und neben der Straße herumgeklettert sind. Die vielen Autos, die ihretwegen stehengeblieben sind, haben sie kalt gelassen und wir konnten ihnen einige Zeit zusehen. Auch das Wetter war uns gnädig, aus dem Staunen über die Landschaft sind wir kaum herausgekommen. Als die Sonne schon tiefer stand, haben wir den Höhepunkt des heutigen Tages erreicht: Die Columbia Icefields. Von diesem riesigen Eisfeld gehen acht Gletscher aus, zu einer dieser Gletscherzungen sind wir hinaufgegangen.

Zwar war der Anblick des Gletschers zwischen den mehr als 3000 Meter hohen Bergspitzen ein toller Anblick, viel mehr haben uns aber die Fahrzeuge fasziniert, mit denen Touristen über den Gletscher fahren können. Der Gletschertourismus scheint hier ein sehr altes Geschäft zu sein, denn nicht nur moderne Busse mit riesigen breiten Reifen warten dort auf Touristen, auch einige Oldtimer sind ausgestellt, alle zusammen Gletscherfahrzeuge, die zum Touristentransport bestimmt sind. Wohl weil wir etwas spät dran waren und die Sommersaison noch nicht begonnen hat, waren wir beinahe alleine auf diesem riesigen Parkplatz. Von dort gab es auch die beste Sicht auf das Eisfeld.

Von dort haben wir uns auf den Weg nach Jasper gemacht. Unterwegs hat die untergehende Sonne die schneebedeckten Bergspitzen in einem kontrastreichen rosa leuchten lassen. Kurz vor Jasper haben wir auch bald eine recht günstige Unterkunft gefunden, allerdings wollten wir zuerst etwas in der Stadt essen. Der Ort ist klein, eigentlich Banff sehr ähnlich, nur die Kulisse ist nicht ganz so spannend. Das Pizzaessen hat doch ein wenig länger gedauert und als wir zurückgekehrt sind, war das Motel bereits nicht mehr besetzt, doch gottseidank haben wir noch eine Alternative gefunden.

Vrijdag 23 juni

Jasper NP naar Lake Louise. Sunwapta Falls, Beauty Creek, Mt Kitchner, Columbia Icefield, Waterfall Lake, Peyto Lake, Bow Ranges, Bow lake.

Woensdag 21 juni

Na een goede nachtrust en een lekker ontbijt gaan we om 10.30 uur op weg naar Miette Hotsprings. We hadden verwacht dat je dit zou kunnen bekijken, maar de Canadezen hebben hier een echte toeristische  atraktie van gemaakt en er valt weinig te zien zonder entreegeld te betalen. Niet dat het veel is, ongeveer Cad 6,25 pp om naar binnen te mogen en om te zwemmen. We zijn nu toch hier, dus gaan we dat maar doen. We kleden ons om en komen bij 2 zwembaden terecht, 1 iets kouder dan de andere, maar beide erg warm. Wel lekker en het is er zeer druk met "oudere" mensen. Het is heerlijk ontspannend, maar weinig om het lijf en na een half uurtje hebben we het wel gezien en gehad. Te lang in het warme water en er komt vandaag nergens meer iets van terecht.

Na een verkwikkende "koude" douche gaan we weer terug naar de camper en komen een kudde geiten tegen op de parkeerplaats. Ze zijn lekker in de rui, dus ze zien er niet uit. Maar ze lopen gewoon overal tussendoor en zijn gewend aan auto's en mensen. Squirls ook in overvloed en sommige zijn wel erg tam.

Vervolgens gaan we op weg naar Maligne Lake (kort filmpje). Op de weg hiernaar toe kom je ook Medicine Lake tegen en dit is echt heel mooi. Ik fotografeer me helemaal suf en we gaan naar Maligne Lake. Het is inmiddels half 4 en het is er erg druk. De boten die het meer op gaan , varen maar tot 16.00 uur, dus we zijn rijkelijk aan de late kant en dat kunnen we niet meer doen. De meeste mensen zitten binnen te eten en hier hebben wij onderhand ook wel zin in. We kijken eerst rond in het winkeltje en gaan vervolgens met onze verlate lunch buiten zitten. Het is niet warm en het waait er hard, maar met een waterig zonnetje best te doen vinden wij. Een wat oudere man vraagt of we het naar onze zin hebben. We antwoorden keurig in het engels maar hij blijkt erg goed nederlands te spreken. Hij is een nederlander die altijd over de hele wereld heeft gewerkt op boorplatformen en nu hier de leiding heeft over de boten, en ze  onderhoudt, die elke dag meerdere malen het meer op varen boordevol met toeristen. Hij verteld ons allerlei dingen over het meer en waar we het beste wat dieren kunnen zien. Leuk gesprek en zo kom je nog eens iemand tegen.

Het meer valt wat ons betreft een beetje tegen, we lopen er een stukje omheen, maar het weer is te bewolkt en slecht om echt mooie foto's te maken. Al snel begint het ook nog eens te regenen en dan houden we het maar voor gezien en gaan terug naar de RV. Op weg naar de RV komen we diverse herten tegen die rustig lopen te grazen en zich nergens aan storen. Op de weg terug naar Medicine Lake komen we inderdaad een mamabeer en haar 2 kleintjes tegen. Toch wel een grappig gezicht als die kleine kontjes door het struikgewas verdwijnen. Het is erg druk met auto's en we besluiten om snel door te rijden, we hebben immers al heel wat beren gezien en andere misschien nog niet..

We rijden naar Maligne Canyon. Hier stoppen net wat bussen met ladingen Amerikanen en het is er erg druk. We proberen zo goed als kwaad een paar mooie foto's te maken van de canyon en de waterval. Je kunt ook alle bruggen over lopen, maar geen idee waar je dan uitkomt, dus dat doen we maar niet. het is in ieder geval minder druk een stuk verder naar beneden.

Als we Jasper weer naderen loopt er een kudde geiten/schapen op de weg en dat geeft een verkeersopstopping. Enkele berggeiten lopen langs de klippen naar beneden en een mamma berggeit is erg druk haar 2 kleintjes naar beneden te loodsen. Dit gaat maar net goed.

In Jasper willen we cash pinnen, maar dat gaat niet. Met geen enkele kaart lukt dit, vreemd, dan morgen maar als de bank open is cash opnemen. We lopen wat door het stadje en winkelen wat. Uiteindelijk belanden we bij de Pizzahut/ BurgerKing voor een minipiza en een dubbele cheesburger als avondeten.

Als we bijna bij de camping zijn staat er een grote Elk op het kruispunt, dus die staat mooi op de foto. Het is al na 21.30 als we moe maar voldaan na deze drukke dag bij de RV aankomen. Even een douche en naar bed.

Donderdag 22 juni

Vanochtend gaan we met Jasper Tramway ( kort filmpje) naar boven de berg op.  Het uitzicht boven is schitterend. Bergketens rondom, Athabasca River en Jasper, zelfs onze camping is te zien. We zien marmotten zitten  op de rotsen en we vragen ons af waar die beesten van leven. Het is een kaal rotslandschap met her en der wat plukjes mosachtig groen wat lijkt op vetplantjes. Een of andere Russische (?) reisleider staat de groep bij elkaar te schreeuwen en verstoort de serene rust. Uiteindelijk levert dat een flink aantal reacties op van mede toeristen die vinden dat hij zijn mond moet houden. Het galmt ook zo lekker na. We lopen een flink eind het laatste stuk van de berg op en gaan na 1 uurtje weer naar beneden. In de lift raken we in gesprek met een wat ouder nederlands echtpaar en al snel staan we ruim een half uur te kletsen op de parkeerplaats van Jasper Tramway.

Hierna gaat onze tocht naar het stadje Jasper, om bij de bank alsnog cash te halen. Hierna besluiten we om bij Smithies te gaan brunchen. Het is inmiddels 13.00 uur en het is per slot van rekening vakantie. Als dit ontbijt en lunch achter de kiezen is gaan we op weg naar de meren die net boven Jasper liggen.

Dinsdag 20 juni

Na de nodige lozingen vertrekken we om 8.00 uur naar Clearwater. Onderweg bekijken we nog  de Spahats Fall die eigenlijk net buiten Grey Wells NP ligt. In Clearwater tanken we en gaan op weg naar Jasper. Op de weg naar Jasper komen we in Bleu River en hier zien we borden van Bleu River Safari. Hier hadden we al over gehoord van mensen, toen we vorige week in het Pacific Rim NP op de camping  stonden . Hier komen we om 11.15 uur aan en boeken een safari. Het stikt hier van de muggen  en de zoon van de eigenaar heeft en ingenieus systeem bedacht om de muggen een beetje weg te houden. Twee grote propellors en 2 nettentjes en een hoop anti-mosquito wierrook verdrijven de meeste muggen en vliegen op de flonder. We moeten even wachten tot 12.00 uur en hebben een geannimeerd gesprek met de eigenaresse. Dan gaan we met een boot op weg Blue River Black Spruce PP in .De boot zit vol en de zoon van de eigenaar vaart en neemt zijn hond mee. Deze hond is getraind om beren op afstand te houden en te ruiken. We worden helemaal ingepakt in een zwemvest en regenpak. Het water van de Blue River  is erg koud, zo'n 4 a 5 graden C en als je erin valt of als je nat wordt kun je maar beter iets om het lijf hebben. Veiligheid voor alles. Maar het weer is aardig en al gauw heb ik het erg warm.

De omgeving is in een woord schitterend. Adembenemend mooi. Hoge bergen met gletsjers en watervallen, veel groen en veel water. We varen naar een eilandje en zien hier 2 beren, waarvan er 1 wel erg nieuwsgierig is. We krijgen de opdracht om niet te praten en de motor van de boot gaat uit. Wij dobberen steeds dichter naar het eiland toe en de beer komt steeds dichter naar de waterkant. Ik heb even het idee dat hij de 2 meter die nog rest wil overbruggen door te springen en volgens mij heeft de kapitein hetzelfde idee en start de motor zodat we iets meer afstand krijgen. Ik heb in de tussen tijd  wel de meest prachtige close ups gemaakt van deze beer en hij komt in de categorie, mooiste foto's tot nu toe. Echt gaaf. De beren zien er helemaal niet eng uit, best grappige kraaloogjes voor zo'n groot beest, maar als je naar de poten en de klauwen kijkt, beself je pas dat het een roofdier is en je echt uit moet kijken.

We stoppen onderweg ook nog bij een waterval. Daarna worden we langs een Bald Eagle nest geloodst. Vrouwtje en mannetje en 2 kleintjes in 1 nest. Dit is eigenlijk best bijzonder en komt zelden voor. Meestal wipt het grootste en sterkste jong de andere uit het nest. Daarna wordt ons nog een Black Spruw nest getoond, maar mamma is er niet en het nest is te hoog om de kleintjes te zien.

We besluiten de lunch hier te gebruiken en deze was door onze kapitein al doorgegeven aan de keuken, zodat bij terugkomst onze burgers al bijna klaar zijn. De burgers zijn echt lekker en na een uitgebreid afscheid, vertrekken we weer richting Jasper. Op Highway 16, richting Jasper vanaf Mount Robson  zien we nog 1 Moose ( onze enige), 1 Elk en 1 Muledeer. Maar we kunnen ze niet fotograferen . We gaan de staat Alberta binnen en het is hier net weer even anders. De verkeersborden zijn in ieder geval anders.

We boeken 3 nachten op Whistlers Campground in Jasper. De eerste nacht hebben we geen hook-up ( aansluitingen), maar dit is geen probleem. Het is een hele grote camping en ik heb niet gereserveerd, maar hij is aardig vol. We gaan in het stadje boodschappen doen en op de camping halen we hout voor ons kampvuur, wat overigens niet gratis is. We eten een hapje en wederhelft is zo gecharmeerd van de didgerido muziek die we voa de autocd laten schallen dat hij spontaan begint te dansen. Dat kan ook, want we hebben geen directe buren op dit stukje en niemand die het ziet, maar de filmcamera legt het gewillig vast voor het nageslacht. Als het echt aarde donker is ( pas rond 24.00 uur) besluiten we te gaan slapen en laten het kampvuur doven. Wij zijn in de staat Alberta en hier is het 1 uur later, voor ons dus eigenlijk pas 23.00 uur. Voor die paar dagen omschakelen zal wel niet echt lukken en dat maakt eigenlijk niet uit.

Jasper is a nice spot, in my opinion. We drove into Jasper and did a few short hikes in the vicinity seeing Maligne River Canyon with great torrents of water and falls and backwaters with pretty rock gardens. We had lunch atop a small hill that overlooks Jasper itself. Jasper has an internet cafe for catching up with friends around the world like most places now.

Another day another hike. Climbed up Opal Hill to overlook Maligne Lake. Some 850 in height, eight kilometres round trip. It hailed at the top of the hill and snow was around on the way back down. The only animal I really saw on the hike was a small rodent typ creature called a pica. There was opportunity to do a heli-hike, but I didn't bother with it. Too much extravagance for a tight budget. I did buy my fancy hiking boots in Jasper though. Had lunch at the Atherby Bar, which was pretty good before seeing a movie at the picture theatre.

Jasper has a small wildlife museum where you can see weasels, minks, bobcats and lynx. I didn't think the pica in the display looked much like the one I saw though. It was quite a drizzly day, which mad things a little depressing I guess. I was mostly on my own this day because the others went on the heli-hike. Just the chirping gophers kept me company. I think the poor cohesiveness of the group made me a little depressed apart from missing my wife's company.

    (Thursday night) Before knocking ourselves out for the night, BS bugged Alynn whether we should move camp indoors or stay put, because the lightning was having its dance show in a distance, over the mountains. Around 3:15 am, BS awoke to find her sleeping bag a bit damp and noticed the cloudy sky looming above us, through the tent roof screen. Without taking further risks, she moved into SUV and snoozed off. About 45 mins later, Alynn was awakened by the dancing drops of rain on her face, scurried to put her somewhat damp sleeping bag in the SUV, and back out to take down the tent. What a record and it should a Guinness record for fastest time to take the tent down in the soon fast-pouring rain! Oh, what a show!

    Ever care to ride on a glacier? Have your chance at the Columbia Icefield and ride the snocoach! It was a sweet little tour, on a cloudy day, and you can see various formations created by the glaciers or should we say, the melting glacier?

    Oh, amazing! Of all places, one would never thought to bump into an old college friend in a National Park, much less another country! It was a nice surprise to see Raj and he was the one who picked Alynn out of the crowd! We were parked in the lot, eating out lunch and he pointed a finger at Alynn. Alynn thought he wanted the parking space and gestured to him that we were not leaving. Then, he signed! Oy!

    We have inherited red noses! It was very brisk and frosty, urging us to warm up ourselves and the truck for the day. Oh, poor BS! She lost her small bag of cacao nibs to those sneaky mice that resides in the rustic hostel! Less chocolate noshing for her!

    What an early start it was for us and we made most of it! Totally rocks! Traveled northwards, into Banff and Jasper, stopping at the following places to view the masterpieces of our planet; Petyo Lake, Mistaya Canyon, Howse and Mistaya River Valleys, Saskatchewan River Crossing, Mounts Amery and Saskatchewan, Weeping Wall, North Saskatchewan River, Cirrus Mountain, Bridal Veil Falls, Tangle Falls, Sunwapta Falls, Athabasca Falls, and of course stopping at the Icefield Centre. This sphere of this planet has been molded, sculpted, groomed, shaped, and painted by the snow, ice, erosions, global warming and age. It astonished us to see how much of the glacier has melted away in short amount of time. Before our eyes, it will disappear so you better grab the chance to enjoy such beauty! Also, take action to be considerate of our Mother Earth!

    This far up north, in the worlds of wonders, in the land of less touchable, this is where more animals are seen than in any other parks we have been to. This particular day, today, we have seen three bighorn mountain sheep, a rascally looking black bear on the edge of the forest grabbing and eating the leaves from the bushes, elks/deers at two different times... Animals are our companions and part of our kingdom.

    The Icefield Center is for sure for you to check out! It was a plan of ours to go on the SnoCoach, where we can experience a ride on the ice for an hour and half. By the time we arrived to the town of Jasper, it would be too late for us to return and make it in time for the last call of Ice Experience on the SnoCoach. It is a must say that Jasper is very artistic town. So beautiful, aesthetic, and very European. Heading back toward to the Icefield Centre, to the campground nearby, more photo opportunities came to BS's door. The sunset was amazing, creating pictures with the clouds, casting shadows on the mountains. Luckily we were able to grab a site for the night for there was only two left! The best part is that it is in the view of the Icefield! Starry stars, wish us good night!

The Icefields Parkway is indeed the most beautiful road in the world!!!

This 230 km of scenic highway spanning Banff and Jasper National Park commemorates Canada's powerful natural landscape. From the beginning of the highway at Lake Louise in Banff National Park to Whistler in Jasper National Park, the scenery is inspiring with awesome mountains, breathtaking sceneries, glistening ancient glaciers, turquoise lakes and evergreen forests.

Our first stop on the Icefields Parkway is Mosquito Creek Campsite. The name was rather befitting as the campsite did indeed have plenty of mosquitoes, just like with other campsites. We had a leisurely day just relaxing and enjoying the beautiful scenery. The creek next to the campsite joins the Bow River a short distance away. Although it is the midst of summer, the water temperature in the creek was a low of approx. 5 deg C. By inmersing the feet into the cold water for just a few seconds, one could already feel the pain and numbness! However that was a rather good therapy for me for the itchness of the mosquitoes bites. As this was a very basic campsite, I had my first taste of collecting water by pumping it from the ground.

Our stop at Waterfowl Lake campsite was certainly rewarding as the scenery of the Chephren Mountain and lake was beautiful. The scenery of the Peyto Lake and Bow Summit area nearby was even more stunning. The setting of the Peyto Lake was more than perfect! The view from one side of this turquoise lake was the endless mountain range in the horizon while the view from the other side was the surrounding mountains and the Wapta Icefield. A memorable trek in this area was the Bow Glacier Falls trail that took us around the Bow Lake, through the pebbles and rocks filled path right to the waterfall just beneath the glacier.

The most beautiful trail on this Icefield Parkway in my opinion is the Parkers Ridge trail. This gradually inclined trail with alpine flowers blooming along the trail offers an awesome and breathtaking view of the Saskatchawen Glacier and River at the top. This is a very popular trail with visitors and we were lucky to have the trail almost all to ourselves when we started our hike at around 5.30pm in the evening. I certainly would highly recommend this trail for a great view of the glaciers over the more popular and conveniently located Columbia Icefield next to the Icefield Center where there are hordes of tourists visit each day.

We finally spotted a black bear next to the highway while on the journey to Whistler. It was really easy to know that a wild animal was roaming around the highway by the "traffic jams" created as people stopped their vehicles and tried to get a good view or pictures of the wild animals. We had three other sighting of bears during the trip.
