Woke up really early but stayed in bed til around 10am when I met H to do some washing as our clothes were absolutely filthy. Had a smoothie and waited for stuff to dry which took til past midday. We then went with K + R to the Art Museum at Fannie Bay which was free. Caught the #4 bus from Cavenagh St for 50 cents (bargain, so much cheaper than Melbourne!). The museum was great. It had heaps of Aboriginal art, a Cyclone Tracey exhibit, a natural history section, 'Sweetheart (a 5.1m stuffed croc), a maritime section with MASSIVE boats, a section about Catholic missionaries, and a scienceworks like bit. It was great but so huge it was exhausting! Afterwards we headed to Mindil Beach to grab some lunch/dinner, see the market, and watch the sunset. I was really hungry so the food was great. I bought some photos of Jim Jim Falls and a Top End Billabong, 2 magnets, and a cloth patch. H tried possum and buffalo. The sunset was amazing. There were hundreds of people sitting on the beach watching it. It was the most brilliant oranges, pinks and purples. I also had a rainbow snowcone which was very artificial but yummy. After the market we taxied back to the hostel and I just packed my stuff up and showered before heading to bed.

Woke up early with a siren going off somewhere. Had a smoothie then sunbaked in the sun with R for ages before H joined us (he had arrived early in the morning on his flight). H & I booked a tour with Wilderness 4WD Adventures for the next day ($470 + $35 camping fees) - a 3 day trip to Kakadu NP. Spent the whole day lazing around, swimming in the pool and getting chores done. H & I went to Thailicious across the road for tea after having it recommended but it was a rip off at $20 for an average pad thai. Met back up with R at the hostel for drinks before hitting the sack early.

Arrived in Darwin about 5pm on my Jetstar flight and took the airport shuttle to my hostel Melaleuca on Mitchell (who I later found out refund the shuttle bus cost of $9 anyway if you stay at least 3 nights). The hostel cost $28/night (with my YHA discount, despite not being a YHA hostel) and I was put in a female 4 bed dorm. My room-mates were L from England and K from Melbourne. I tried to find my friend Rose for ages but gave up and went to Mindil Beach with L and her friend C who drove us there to watch the Territory Day fireworks. They were amazing! They even had pink fireworks that exploded in the shape of hearts.

You can only get there with their permission, which means a guided tour. The cultural aspect of the tour is not for me. Same same rock paintings, each comes with a no fun fairytale. When we go to visit an aboriginal village it’s the limit for me; it’s like I’m waking in a zoo, checking out the funny little aborigines in their natural habitat. I reckon they’ll make a viewing platform pretty soon, with fences and signs about not feeding the aborigines. White men coming over to see a destroyed society. It disgusts me, but these tours do also create a much needed income for the communities. I’m torn on the subject, and I wouldn’t know if I would recommend a tour like this… The history part is alright, as are the rock paintings I guess, but going to the village to check out people, that just doesn’t work with me.

In the end the hero manages to save the pretty girl from the jaws of death, but pretty much everyone else dies. I delight my family by replaying scenes of that film. Unfortunately for us we’re not attacked by a giant croc (robbing me of the opportunity to save a hot babe from certain death) but the Yellow Water scenery does make up for it. The sky stunningly reflects in the water and the birds are not to shy to show. Add the sun and a cocktail and you’re in heaven, add some thirty other tourists and a noisy boat and you’re in, well, Yellow Waters.

Katherine gorge is a pretty famous series of gorges (thirteen in total) close to Katherine. It’s a beautiful place and well worth a visit. You can canoe all the way up to the second gorge, carry your canoe for a bit and continue on to the third. We’re in a bit of a hurry but are still able to enjoy the scenery and chillax on the water. That afternoon we relax some more in the Katherine pools. Close enough to town a well provides water to a nicely constructed pool with different levels. It’s an A place to chill out, for tourists and locals alike. After spending a week in the Top End we have one national park left on our list; Litchfield.
Darwin, Australia>, Jun 17, 2008

Daarna de florence falls waar we weer even lekker afkoelen.

So got to Darwin by plane, not ideal, but needed to get there asap. Travelled to Darwin with Lucinda and Emer.
Went for a couple of beers with them in the irish bar, had to be done.
Did a day trip with Kakadu Dreams to Litchfield, and then 3 day trip to Kakadu with the same company.
Litchfield was cool, more of a waterfall trip, and ant hills. Lots of ant hills. (Sorry, correction, Termites).
Nightlife, ok, if a little confined to one street. Good town though. Went out with the group after the Litchfield trip.
Same after the Kakadu trip.
