The Canadian Rockies are well known for breathtaking sceneries. Among my personal favorites is Moraine Lake. This gem is located about 30 miles northwest of Banff in the Banff National Park. Or 10 miles south of Lake Louise. Just follow the sights from the Transcanada Highway.

Best time to go there in my opinion is the early morning - for several reasons. First there won't be many tourists around. The whole place is wonderfully quiet then. Second you can watch the sun slowly rising and flooding the valley and sea with light. And, I can tell you, the color of the lake is simply unbelievable! Of course it is best on sunny days. But even when it is cloudy the lake is "glowing" turquoise and blue-green. Third reason is that later in the day canoes appear on the water. Perhaps an option for you!

Please note: There are also some interesting hikes in the Moraine lake area which are sometimes restricted due to Grizzly bear activity!

A few km away from Lake Louis is Moraine Lake. I think it is just as beautiful! Just as the day before it was rainy and very cloudy and when my friend said she wants to do a canoe tour on the lake I just though well in the rain..... but as we got the canoe the weather started to change! We even saw some blue sky! It was a fantastic tour and I am really glad we did it! The water had an amazing aquamarine colour it was so peacfully and quiet!

It is named for the pile of rock which dammed the valley, creating the lake.
