The last day in Ko Yao was another quiet one, Erin was shown how to make the Banana pancakes that we were having each morning and we booked a tuk tuk and ferry to Krabi.

The following morning we got up early to catch our ferry to krabi, and to say our goodbyes to the owners. Our lovely hosts had also made us our favourite Banana pancakes (for free!!). When the tuk tuk arrived we jumped in and they waved goodbye until we were out of view, even holding up a cat and making it wave goodbye too... The folks at Tabeak View Point Bungalows have been the nicest people we have met (so far), Thailand is a beautiful country - the land of smiles for sure, but to tell the truth, behind the smiles are people trying to get as much money from the tourists as possible. Gets a bit annoying at times... Anywho!!

After a 45 minutes boat ride we were in Krabi - there was no tuk tuks at the ferry so we asked a guy in a ute for a lift to Krabi town. He said sure - 50 baht each. The price turned out to be 150baht each at the end of the journey... hmmm - we weren't too impressed with that, and he didn't even drop us at our accommodation!!

Once there we were met by a Chines woman who tried to get us to do tours for " very cheap prices" we said no thanks and dropped our bags off and went for a walk around the town. Not much to do there really so we got some more books had a feed and looked around the same old shop selling t shirts and sourvinors. we stayed two nights. One the last day we asked for a mini van to Ko Lanta - she said " yes, you good guests, I give you discount, normally 300 baht each but I give you 250 each, Wow thats we said. We later found out that the trip costs 250 each. Lying bitch.

Mini van to Ko lanta took 3 hours and two small ferry crossings. Our hotel "Lanta Island Resort" looked very dodgy from the road, we later found out that thats were the staff stay and our rooms was closer to the beach and restraunt. The beach is very nice - golden sand and we have had lots of hot weather with thunder storms at night to cool you down. We have been here 5 nights.

Relaxed place to stay where I ended up when the taxidriver said "i bring you somewhere else...". The owner is very frienly. Every day beach volleybal. The have their own restaurant where you also can stay when it rains. So you don't have to stay in your cabin. At the beach the have some relax places to ly down and enjoy then view.
Next door is the great bar/restaurant Funcky Fish (the show dvd's at night) and the O-zone bar is also nearby.

The cabins are bamboo and vary in size. Some have their own bathroom and a veranda. They all have musquito nets.

Great place!

Our Koh Lanta experience started with an early morning boat ride from Krabi. After a bit of a false start with a two hour wait at our hotel and Mike telling the reception people "No, no not same, same," over and over - those of you that have been to Thailand will know what I am talking about, we were off. What cracks me up is, as usual, we get off the overpacked tuk tuk and the driver says to us, "Quick, quick, you will miss the boat," as if that was our falt!! But anyway we arrived in Koh Lanta in one piece. It is truely a beautiful island and my advice is if you want to go get there fast cause there are parts of this paradise that are untouched by the tourism bug at the moment! As we got off the ferry we could here lots of calling and yelling, "Oh they're going to sing to us," I thought - you can tell I have spent a bit of time in Fiji! This is not the way it is done in Thailand "You want tuk tuk, you want hotel??" So much for a welcoming committee!! Anyway one of the drivers stuck to us like glue and we eventually negotiated a price to our bungalows. Unfortunately on the way there the heavens opened and Mike and the driver had to put down to makeshift sides to this motorbike with side car! To add to the joy the road to where we were staying was red dust (sort of like you see in the Australian outback) and it was VERY steep - I thought they were going to have to come and peel us off the bottom of the hill. But as usual these drivers are used to it and when we got to the bottom he was even gentlemanly enough to ask for an umbrella for me! We stayed at Sayang Beach bungalows, which was awesome!! Lovely staff - run by a Muslim family and the Thai-Muslims have the best sense of humour! During our stay we went for an outing to four islands including one in Trang which was lovely. We snorkelled and visited a cave, which we swam through to a beautiful beach on the other side. We met more friends - Steve and Melinda from Melbourne who helped us celebrate Mike's birthday with a cake I got at a "French" bakery. We also went for a scooter ride at Mike's request for his birthday and he went to the kickboxing which he loved. All and all we had a great time. Koh Lanta is an awesome place!!

I had originally been interested in another hotel on Khlong Dao Beach but when I stopped by that other hotel in search of a room I found that they were full. On my way to that hotel I passed by Lanta Scenic Bungalow and thought that it looked nice. So I went back and asked if they had any rooms and they did and for a slightly better price.

Lanta Scenic Bungalow is a mid priced bungalow style hotel. I got my bungalow for 1400 baht (single). The room had air conditioning, piping hot water, an ensuite style bathroom, cable television and a mini fridge. The hotel is located just off the beach, on a side street, just behind a row of beachfront hotels so the beach is not that far away at all.

The hotel staff was very helpful. The room was clean and well maintained. The location was good, quite close to the beach and a 15 minute walk into the main part of Saladan Town. The rows of bungalows look cute from the outside and the grounds have nice landscaping. There is a restuarant at the hotel that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I enjoyed my stay at Lanta Scenic Bungalow and would stay there again.

Today was a day to relax and enjoy the trip. Make no real plans just do what feels right. I decided to walk south on the main road from were the side road that I was staying on is. Pretty much more of the same and maybe a little more spread out. There are are a few restaurants that might be local favorites and a tire shop and a small Mosque. I eventually cut back over to the beach and walked back on the beach. I stopped at the beach mall and did some catching up on my e-mail.

Today was a pretty chill day. I took a nap and lazed around town soaking in the culture. I did get a pair of reading glassed in town. There are a lot of optical shops in town and I though I would check out what they had. They had a nice pair of frames and a basic reading glasses prescription that I got for $40 so I decided to get a pair to save my aging eyes from readng small print. They were originally on sale for around $75 and sinse I felt I was not all that desperately in need of a pair of glasses I stuck to my bid of $40 and eventually got it after the girl discussed it with the manager in the store. The girls in the store were cute all dressed in their white skirt uniforms. The glasses are not top quality but they work fine for the few times that I need them.

For dinner I went to a restaurant along the pier. From the street you can't see the seating areas of any of the restaurants so once you are all the way in you find it is empty. There are a lot of retaurants along the pierside, and along the beachfront too for that matter, so there were not that many people in the restaurant that I chose. I like seafood but it seems that most Thai restaurants cook the fish whole so deboning the fish is always a problem so I had a nice cashew nut and chicken stir fry.

Another day in paradise. Tomorrow I make my way north to Chaing Mai.......................

Ko Lanta, Thailand>, Jan 17, 2008

Today was my day to go diving at Ko Lanta. I went diving with Lanta Diver and they picked me up at my hotel and brought me to the dive shop where I met my dive master. From there we headed over to the pier in the back of a pickup truck and loaded onto the boat. Lanta Diver is one of the bigger operations in town and they had a lot of people going diving today so we were in their bigger boat. As is Thai custom our boat was stacked up with another boat so we walked across the other boat to get to our boat which was a big two deck boat with the dive gear on the bottom level and a galley and sitting area up above. There were about 25 divers on board and everyone was divided into groups with their divemaster.

Everyone was aboard so we left the pier and then it was breakfast time. They gave us a buffet style breakfast of a breakfast sandwhich which we made ourselves in a buffet line (egg, cheese, tomato on a piece of bread). It was actually pretty good. We were headed out to Ko Bida which is just south of Ko Phi Phi and about an hour boat ride away. That gave me time to get to know my dive buddy (Wolfgang) and our Divemaster (Nora) gave us a pre dive briefing. Wolfgang was from Germany and he spoke just a little bit of English. Nora was from Switzerland so she was able to talk to Wolfgang and me in both our languages.

We arived at ko Bida Which is just a steep sided rock sticking out of the water. There were several other dive boats milling around the area picking up or dropping off their divers. Our big dive boat got into production mode and got all of us out pretty quickly. ONce in the water it was nice to be back under water again. I usually have some trouble gettng my ears to adjust to the pressure of deedp water but this time I had no trouble at all. I attribute that to all the snorkeling I did last week geting my ears lubed up. I had been doing a lot of diving deep while snorkeling so I had gotten my ears used to the pressure. Today the weathere was mostly cloudy so we didn't have all that much sunlight in the water so visibility and underwater colors were a little flat. We did have good visibility though and for our maximum depth of about 45 feet we could still see the surface clearly. The dive was OK. Nothing too spectacular. There were a few rock formations to add to the interest but nothing special. The best part of it was the fish were not scrambling away from you like they do for snorkelers so I could take pictures in a more relaxed way without having to chase after them. There were some cool wildly patterned boxfish, some triggerfish and the divemaster found us a lobster tucked deep into a crack. You could just see the feelers sticking out of the crack. After about 50 minutes under water we came up and loaded back on board and headed over to the next dive spot.

The next dive spot was Hin Bida which is a small rock that just barely pokes out of the water. We tied off our big dive boat to the rock and had lunch. It was another buffet style lunch that was a selection of three Thai Stir fries with rice. It was all very good.

After the briefing for our seconds dive we geared up and jumped in the water again. Visibility was pretty much the same as the previous dive. The terrain was ridges that radiate out from the central point of the island. You could explore each side canyon. We saw similar fish as the last time but this time we saw some Leopard Sharks that were hanging out on the bottom. Leopard sharks are not really sharks they are fish that are big that are shaped like a shark. These were about 5 or 6 feet long. We saw two of them hanging out on the bottom in two diferent places. Nora found us a tiny slug that was moving along the bottom. It was so small it was surprising that she found it. It was black and white striped and the stripes were highly contrasted. This was another mediocre dive. Nothing too spectacular just fun being underwater. The second dive had the possibility of seeing Whale Sharks. That would have been awesome. Some of the other groups of divers saw cuttlefish. That would have been pretty cool too.

Once we were all back on the boat we started back towards Ko Lanta. I talked to a guy from Brazil up on the bow of the boat. It was interesting sharing travel tales and watching the sea pass by.

Back on dry land they brought us back to our hotels. I took a little break and then headed towards town by way of the beach. I took the road along the channel between the islands to get to the main part of town. There is not much up here along this part of the road, It is not bad real estate so I could see that some day in the future this could get developed. I wandered around town exploring all there was to see. I checked out the side street that T's into the main road and parallels the channel between the islands. This street has pierside restaurants and a few dive shops. I browsed some of the restaurant menus. They all look pretty good. I headed back toward my hotel on the main street and grabbed a piece of fried chicken, as a snack, from a street vendor. Yesterday they had told me it was 10 baht but today they sold it to me for 20 baht. It was good and it was a lot cheaper than in the United States so it was not a big deal. I grabbed a few more snacks along the way at a 7-11. Once I was back at my room it started to rain really hard so I had a few of my snacks and decided not to venture out tonight for dinner. I had had a late snack anyway. No need to gain weight on a vacation.

Ko Lanta, Thailand>, Jan 16, 2008

I took a ferry from Ko Lipe to Ko Lanta. It is about a 3 hour boat ride on the ferry. The ferry actually moves along quite fast and the ocean slips by pretty quickly. There is a little side-to-side rock to the boat and with the rapid forward motion it is rather relaxing. I alternated between the airconditioned cabin and the open roof deck where I went when the scenery was nice.

There are several small islands along the way and we passed some fishing boats. The fishing boats tend to work at night so there was not much activity on them. You can see their bright lights out at sea from the beach in most seaside towns. We approached a steep rocky cliffed limestone rock formation island and the boat circled around the north point of it where we could see a beach on the east side of the island. A few minutes later a speedboat came rushing out to drop off passengers for the ferry. That was Ko Lao Ling. It is a small island out in the middle of the Andaman sea. I heard it has a couple of spendy restorts on it.

The next stop on the ferry was the port of Had Yao on the mainland that services the town of Trang. It is a small town where you could catch a minivan and the train to the north. There were steep sided limestone cliffs as a backdrop to the town. We saw a cow or water buffallo being loaded onto a longtail boat on the shore as we came into the harbor.

Next stop was Ko Mook. A few people got off here. It looks like a small little quiet beach town. From what I hear there are just a few higher end resorts. I was talking to a couple who got off here and then I saw them a couple of days later in Ko Lanta. They said they couldn't find much to do on Ko Mook so they took a longtail boat to the mainland and then a van to Ko Lanta.

Nest stop could have been Ko Nga but nobody was going there. You could see it south of the boat and it looked like a nice little island. Probably mainly spendy resorts.

After Ko Mook there were only 3 of us on the boat. Me and a couple from Jamaica, who were actually from America (she was) and Sweden (he was) and they moved to Jamaica. So with only 3 of us on the boat they decided to save fuel by going about half the original speed we were going before. It wasn't all that far so it was ok. The boat goes through the cut between Ko Lanta Noi and Ko Lanta Yai (the main island) and there are mangrove swamps on the shores. I guess it was a very low tide because we stopped to make sure we had enough room under the boat to make it through. At least that is what we gathered from the crew who spoke no English but that is what we got from the hand signals we got from them.

The pier at Ko Lanta is in Saladan Town on the north point of the island. Once again as in Pak Bara we did not get our boat directly up against the pier. We had to walk across 3 other boats to get onto the pier. It was a bit of a hike across them with heavy bags and jumping from one boat to the other.

The ferry has a website at tigerline travel.com where you can get more info about the ferry I took.

Once on shore I was hoping to find a good deal for a taxi to look for a hotel. Most of them wanted 150 baht to go just about a mile or so into town. The other couple on the boat struck up a good deal with a motorcycle taxi driver though. They were going to the far side of the island and they could get me to my hotel for only 40 baht. Our taxi driver was a Muslim woman wearing a veil. We crammed the 3 of us and all our big baggage into her motor bike side car and took off. We told her she scored all the pasengers on the boat and the other taxi drivers got nothing. She laughed at that. She was pretty funny. I had done some research on the internet for lodging and the Golden Bay Cottages looked like a good place to stay for 1400 baht. We got there and they said that they didn't have any rooms for that price, just the higher price rooms. So we headed back down the side street to a place we had seen on the way in. This place was called Lanta Scenic Bungalow and they had a room for 1400 baht and I think it was a nicer room in the long run (see the review below for more info) It was just 100 yard from the beach and 100 yard closer to town than the other place.

I settled in a little then teh guy at the front desk wanted me to pay for the room with cash and he said he would give me a ride into town to get some travelers checks cashed at one of the currency exchange booths. There's lots of them to chose from in popular tourist towns and they are open till almost 9 PM. So I hopped on the back of his motor bike and he got me into town. I cashed some travelers checks and checked out the town. I knew I wanted to go diving at Ko Lanta so I thought I would check out the dive shops. I stopped in at two shops and chose Lanta Diver. They seemed like a big full service dive shop that seemed very responsible and had a full day trip including hotel pick up, breakfast, 2 dives and a lunch. I wandered around town exploring a bit and then headed back to the bungalow. I walked back and forth between the room and town as it was only abouth a 10 or 15 minbute walk and the taxi drivers wanted 100 baht ($3) to drive you in their motorbike with sidecar. It is nice to walk and see all the sights anyway. You miss all the interesting things if you zip by in a car. I stopped by the night market on the way back. I tried some dragonfruit and one of their "red apples" which has more of a bell like shape than a pear does. They were both good.

For dinner I checked out the beach and found that there were a lot of restaurants so I found one that had a good menu and had a real meal in a restaurant for once. I got a massaman curry dish that was very good. Massaman curry is the muslim version of curry and I figured that sinse I was in the south of Thailand this would be a good place to try it.

I walked back to my bungalow along the beach. Another good day in Paradise.

We realise we are just one step away from living on this island...BUT we thought we'd come back for one last time...just to show the boys HOW GOOD IT IS! We spent the following 3 days enjoying the last of the sun before returning to the inevitably bad weather of Oz, eating posh meals that dont cost one million dollars, and swimming in a sea that doesn't try to claim your swimsuit every 5 minutes....a final goodbye to Thailand, and a fantastic end to our travels with the boys!

The finale of our 3 week jolly in Asia came when, after an evening on the adjacent beach, we realised all the tuk tuks were gone....causing us to spread eagle across the road, stopping all oncoming traffic, and then forcing poor innoncents to let us have a free ride on their moped. Unfortunatly me and scott drew the short straw and had to squeeze onto a moped being ridden already by two ladyboys - so now there are four people, squashed onto the back of a moped...and all of a sudden there is a loud explosion, and the tire bursts about 3 km from our destination! So me and scott get dropped off in the middle of nowhere by now very angry ladyboys brandishing handbags...and spend the next 20 minutes running down the road away from packs of stray dogs. Classic.

Also fuer Paerchen oder Cliquen sicher geeignet...

The next stop was Koh Lanta, an island just south of Phi Phi. Originally we were planning on staying here for 2 nights, before heading to Phuket, but after hearing disgraceful reports of Phuket, being compared to blackpool on heat...we decided to avoid this prositute paradise...resulting in us becoming marooned in Koh Lanta for 20 nights!!

We stayed with the Kokyai family, at Lanta Garden Home, on the Khlong Dao beach...a huge stretch of powder white sand, with sea deep enough to swim in, but warm enought to bath in at 28 degrees!! We soon found that this place was impossible to
leave!! The family were so lovely, with the mum doing the cooking, the dad wandering around mumbling about how thai women look like elephants (??!!), 4 sisters running the guest house and brothers/husbands and cousins running Bomp Bar.

We spent a considerable amount of time doing the 100m round trip from bungalow to beach to bar, and then back to the bungalow, which made us so horizontal, getting up before 12 was a crime. In the true sense of 'mucking in' I was roped into going to the pier with Mat (Bomp Bar Bartender and Cocktail Extrordinaire) in order to tout unsuspecting tourists, fresh off the boat...and take them back to the guest house.

As we were here SO LONG, I managed to organise Lauras Birthday Bash, in Bomp Bar. This included Live DJ Mat, Buckets for 150 BHT, Birthday Cake and free shots of tequila for 10 minutes (BAD IDEA...3 in a row and I was curled up in a hammock for the night). The night was a success....probably due to the 300 flyers that were distributed on the beach....but the time to leave had arrived, we were embarking on the 19 hour journey to the east coast...where the full moon party awaited............

Beach, bats and bloody toes in Koh Lanta!

Ko Lanta, Thailand>, Dec 02, 2007

The trip over to Koh Lanta was a little hairy to say the least. All kicked off with a longtail boat journey on to the ferry... imagine 10 elephants squeezing into a mini, and you get the idea of how cramped it was! Wasn't the calmest of days either so it was a miracle that neither a passenger (probably me!!) or a bag didn't fall in.

Trip over to Koh Lanta was pretty long and at times very choppy so we were more than happy to reach Koh Lanta 5 hrs later, even though we had to clamber over 3 boats to get to the port... not particularly easy with big rucksacks on!!

Koh Lanta was a nice change from Koh Lipe - still benefiting from clear blue sea and beautiful beach, but quite a bit more going on especially on the beach in the evening. We decided to hire a scooter for 2 days, making sure we got to see plenty of the island and some beautiful secluded beaches.

Unfortunately I seemed to be blighted by a clumsy curse in Koh Lanta! On the first night I managed to slip on the bathroom floor... sending me straight on to my arse (hilarious for Neil obviously). The following day we went caving (more about that later) again I managed to slip... however managed to save myself from a complete "arse over tit" episode but managed to achieve a nice bruise on my bum! The next day it was my toe, which I managed to stub on the only rock on the beach!

Caving - I thought this was going to be a pleasant stroll through a bit of jungle to a cave, a quick look around and then back home. How wrong could I be! The alarm bells should have rung when the guy was checking to see how much water I had. The walk up to the cave wasn't too bad, a bit of a scramble at times but nice to be in the countryside under the shade of the trees during the day. We reached the cave after approx 30mins. After a small break we entered the cave... down a very narrow passage and a long ladder, at this point I should have mentally prepared myself for more of the same!

After an hr in the sweltering cave we eventually emerged! I guess it wasn't so bad but I was really tired... Neil was beaming, especially having seen lots of bats?! Was starting to struggle on the way back to the scooter... at least it was downhill, even though there was a bit of climbing (well I thought there was anyway) on the way.

Our second day in Koh Lanta was much more relaxing, driving around the island for the ideal beach... once found it was a day of relaxation, plus a little bit of browsing in Lanta old town

Our last day in Koh Lanta was mainly spent doing research for the rest of our trip - unfortunately the dream of taking each day as it comes isn't really feasible all the time. Anyway at least it was productive, and we booked our flight up to Bangkok for the following day.

What was meant to be two nights of R&R....turned into 8 nights of Bomp Bar cocktails and Garden Home green curries....that place is impossible to leave!! We decided to stay for longer as it was the Kings Birthday on the 5th...which meant big parties on the island, with everyone having the day off....so bomp bar staff joined us in the sea for a bout of fishing....which would have been fine if it wasnt infested with burning jellyfish....after such a traumatic experience we couldnt even think about leaving until full recovery....which took us 3 days.

HOWEVER, feeling a little ashamed that for a good 20 nights we had been positively stationary, we decided we ought to GET OF OUR ASSES and do some sightseeing. You hear the word cave....you think well lit, cavernous area with paths and handrails and information boards. What we actually got was a 30 minute climb up the side of a cliff with the help of 20 yr old ropes....a squeeze through a small dark hole in the floor with only a head torch for light, a scramble over bamboo bridges and ladders, followed by a 5m crawl through a 40cm round hole. We also got the chance to abseil down a rockface into a cave pool....me and laura decided to go for it so I got stripped down into my swimming gear...only to look up and see laura retreating....so yep, it was either go down or lose face. SO MUCH FUN THOUGH!

Anyway, it got to the point where it was leave...or miss the flight to Australia....so we reluctantly packed our bags and headed for Malaysia.

There's a lot of trouble in the Deep South of thailand, and there are only a couple of crossings that are safe...so naturally we headed for the unsafe one! It was a complete accident. We arrived in Hat Yai....danger city....and spent an hour wandering around. Dont know what all the fuss is about...it's actually a really nice place :-) Anyway, feeling much happier to be moving on again we arrived in George Town, Penang slightly dazed and confused....followed by a quick exit to the Cameron Highlands.
