After leaving the Colares Winery, we headed to the western coast of Portugal. We then stopped at Cabo da Roca, the western most point of mainland Europe. This coastal area is made up of sheer cliffs. In this location, the Atlantic Ocean is a beautiful deep blue mixed with bright whitecaps that break against huge rocks. Cabo da Roca also has a small, red lighthouse.

While on the train from Lisbon to Sintra, I was reading my Lonely Planet book about nearby attractions, one of which was Cabo da Roca. I was torn between visiting the Moorish castle in Sintra or trying something a little different and traveling by bus to Cabo Da Roca. Since castles are abundant in Europe, and there is only one "westernmost point of continental Europe," I decided to head to "Cabo." I headed down to the "Sintra Bus Depot" and checked out the bus timetable. I had some time to kill, so I opted to spend it having lunch at Pizza Hut. I had the most interesting personal pan pizza topped with tuna and shrimp...maybe it was a coastal Portuguese thing, or I'm just not that in "tuna" with current pizza trends.

The bus arrived, so I boarded it and paid my few euro to the driver. We traversed through some Portuguese hills and headed toward the coast. After about a half an hour, the bus stopped at Cabo da Roca, and I disembarked. I was met with the sight of a beautiful red lighthouse and lots of wind. It was a beautiful sunny day, but I was happy to have some sleeves on my shirt. A busload of elderly Italian tourists was also visiting this remote point on the coast, and it was hard to take some nice pictures without them in it. My patience prevailed, and the Italians left. I really didn't have anywhere else to go anyway, since the next bus came in 1.5 hours. I walked along the coast and snapped some photos and smiled toward the Atlantic Ocean. I was happy to be in Portugal and to take this spontaneous side trip from Lisbon. The cliffs were amazing. The sky was blue and the flowers in the area were in bloom. There are little pathways that you can walk along the coast, but there's not much else to do in Cabo da Roca. If you are hungry, you can stop by the little restaurant for a coffee or ice cream and shop in the gift shop. Since I was full of fishy pizza, I opted to soak up some sun, so I waited at the bus stop for the next bus to Lisbon...
