Our plan was to get some breakfast, to chill out in our room, to pack our stuff, to get a bath, to shave, to clean ourselves up, and nicely check out.

Damn... so far our plans. The mrs was good to give us a bit of discount, for not making it to breakfast. With our sleepy heads, a small hang over from all the cocktails we drunk last night, it was time to make the huge trip back to Maastricht.

Well there's nothing much to say about it. We listened to all our favorite tracks, we listened to at the last past weeks. Got a bite at the BK with more flies flying around then burgers being made. Made a pisstop at the German roadtoilets, all with lounge music and robottoilets, cleaning up whole of the toilet. Note: must have one of those at home.

It was late in the evening, but still light, when we came in Holland. Funny enough it was the same roas we used to get the hell out of Holland. The Ferrari stopped at the house of my mate, with the astounishing 4547 kilometers on our counter. We extended our holiday to the back garden, chilled down on our seats, took a look of all our pictures (800 of them), drunk our last Rum and Vodka, and toasted on our holiday: Eurotrip 2008 !

After three days of shooting two movies in Amsterdam and Brussels, I had to chill out a bit. Only bad part: there was no time. I had to wash my cloaths, and try to put my cloathing closet in one small bag. Victory was mine, so packed with a bag as heavy as the pyramides times 2, I went to Maastricht by train.

Ah, Maastricht... the most southern part of the Netherlands, a place where you cant understand anyone. My feeling for being in a foreign country: hills, real stone, and locals speaking another language. Maastricht gets 2 out of 3 points, making the holiday vibe to begin!

STAYOKAY HOSTEL - MAASTRICHT +31-43-750-1790 www.stayokay.com/maastricht After a delightful day touring marvelous Maastricht, Raphke (Raphje) and Sanne (sannekoek) kindly walked their bikes with me to Stayokay Hostel. The hostel is relatively new, having opened in April 2007. It's located on the bank of the Maas River about 1½ miles from Maastricht's main drag and a 20 minute walk from the train station. The place has a clean, contemporary lobby and both clerks I interacted with were helpful and courteous. The accomodations are what you expect in a budget hostel. Because business was slow, I was fortunate to get a four cot room to myself with its own bathroom. I would recommend Stayokay Maastricht to anyone looking for cheap quarters that doesn't mind staying a little bit away from the action.

een jaartje geleden alweer., maar toch ook wel een memorabele vakantie -uitstapje, zoals u wilt. Vakantie in eigen land blijft leuk. Ook al woon je dan ik een klein landje dat officieel half onder water had moeten staan. In de meivakantie van 2007 was het dan zover, want om het heug'lijke feit te vieren dat mijn ouders 25 jaar alweer getrouwd waren, gingen we met zijn allen (= 5) naar Zuid Limburg. Van het Groene hart (afvoerputje) naar het Dak van Nederland. Leuk hotel, aardige mensen blabla. Hebben we de hele week dan in dat hotel gezeten? Nee dûh, natuurlijk niet! Want hoe vaak kom je nou in Zuid Limburg? Juist. En omdat Het Hotel in een prachtomgeving lag, was het meteen al de eerste dag "de paden op, de lanen in". Omdat vijf dagen hossen en klossen door de Zuid-Limburgsche Bossen op den duur toch wat eentoig wordt, besloten we er een dagje Maastricht (mestreech) tussen te plakken. Een prima keuze, zo bleek later.

We waren al een paar keertjes in Mestreech geweest, maar dan kwamen we met de trein, en nu hadden we ons automobiel bij ons, wat toch weer een hele andere dimensie geeft (parkeerleed, fileleed, wagenziek-zijn-leed, jaja, ook in het rustige zuiden..). En wederom, leuke plek, aardige mensen blabla. want het leuke aan Maastricht is toch echt wel dat het een heusch stukje buitenland in eigen land is. Ten eerste natuurlijk het hoogteverschil. in plaats van 30 meter eronder nu 100 meter erboven; rasechte randstedelingen met hoogtevees zullen het moeilijk hebben daar. Ten tweede de talrijkheid (hoor mij...) aan stadsmuren, watermolens (2), prachtige kerken en leuke straatjes waar je urenlang kunt dwalen en struinen.  

Ik kan er nog wel urenlang over doorwauwelen, maar ik kan het kort houden: Mestreech is gewoon een prachtstad! Je kunt er vanalles, van urenlang de prachtige gebouwen bewonderen tot terasjes pikken en lekker shoppen/struinen. Of zoals ze ook wel zeggen: "Mestreech, voor elck wat Wils!", en zo is het.

Coffeelovers is about coffee, coffee and coffee! Here you can find many sorts of coffee. From a normal coffee or cappuccino till coffee with a vanilla, cinnamon or chocolat flavour. I had a "cafe nocciolato" a hazelnut, chocolat cappuccino, and it was delicious! If you are hungry you can also eat sandwiches here, or cakes! (look at my picture!) And if you don't like coffee, you can also drink a tea or some soda. When you're in Maastricht you really have to taste one of the best coffees here!

• Every town has a 'lempkes optocht' light parade in the evening!
• One week before carnaval starts there is a ' ouw wiever bal' this is only for women, they have to dress up like 'old women' and then party... but i guess if your a guy and dress up like an old lady your welcome as well ;)

Den Bosch-Valkenswaard-Weert-Beek-Maastricht

Vanmorgen probeerden we om een uur of acht op te staan om zo een uur later te kunnen ontbijten. Het ontbijt was een continental breakfast wat we ons goed lieten smaken. Ma en ik gingen zelfs voor een 2^e ronde. Nog even tanden poetsen en daarna de tassen inpakken en naar beneden naar de receptie. Hier rekende ik af en mochten we de bagage even achter slot en grendel neerzetten zodat we de handen vrij hadden om nog even Maastricht in te gaan.

Het was nog een beetje mistig toen we op pad gingen en dat hield in dat we van onze kant van de Maas de overkant bijna niet konden zien. Toch staken we weer over met de loopbrug en gingen eerst op pad naar het O.L. Vrouweplein dat was uitgeroepen tot de mooiste terrasstraat van Nederland. Hier bezochten we de O.L. Vrouwe Sterre der Zee kerk. Een heel oud gebouw waar een mooie sfeer heerste. We bezochten hier ook de schatkamer waar we dus weer de bevestiging kregen dat de kerk zeker niet armlastig is.

Verder ging het hierna weer richting het Vrijthof om daar de St. Janskerk en de St. Servaas basiliek te bezoeken. Eerst gingen we naar de St. Janskerk die ten tijde van de 80-jarige oorlog gereformeerd was geworden zoals zoveel kerken die in die tijd in plaatsen stonden die werden veroverd op de Spanjaarden. Het was wel heel duidelijk dat het ooit een katholieke kerk was geweest aan het mooie orgel.

De hiernaast staande basiliek was ook heel erg mooi. Eerst bezochten we hier de schatkamer waar nog meer moois uitgestald stond dan in die eerdere kerk van die ochtend. De kerk zelf was heel mooi en er was al heel wat restauratiewerk aan verricht.

Het was ondertussen al na twaalf uur en we besloten zo langzaamaan weer eens richting het hotel te lopen om de bagage te halen. Ook was de zon doorgekomen en de temperatuur was heerlijk, zoals het tijdens een beetje vakantie ook zou moeten zijn. Ik haalde de auto van de parkeerplaats terwijl Ellen en Ma de bagage zouden halen in het hotel. Al gauw ging het toen richting A2 en verder naar het noorden.

Weer terug bij de auto ging het richting Maastricht waar we de nacht wilden doorbrengen.

Net als de vorige dag in de stad Luxemburg kwamen we ook in Maastricht aan tijdens de middagspits dus moesten we ons in de file voegen. Eenmaal in het centrum stopten we bij het eerste het beste hotel om te vragen of ze misschien nog een kamer voor ons hadden. Dit hotel, dat een Best Western hotel bleek te zijn en aan het Vrijthof lag, had geen kamer meer over maar zou even bellen naar het collega-hotel aan de andere kant van de Maas en daar hadden ze nog wel een kamer over. Weer in de auto en in de file (begon ondertussen al weer af te nemen hoor) bereikten we dit hotel waar ze juist een receptie hadden vanwege het 100-jarig bestaan van dit hotel. Bij de ingang stonden een aantal mensen in Nelson-kostuum of zoiets maar ze lieten ons netjes door. Het was even lastig om de receptie te bereiken door alle mensen heen en dwars door een speech heen maar het lukte en al gauw gingen we naar onze kamer. Wauw wat een kamer, die bestond uit 2 delen: een slaapgedeelte en een zitgedeelte. Af en toe moet je jezelf maar eens verwennen niet waar? Ellen en ik haalden nu de grote tassen uit de auto en konden we ons een beetje installeren al is het maar voor één nacht.

’s Avonds wilden we eten op het Vrijthof dus zo gezegd zo gedaan gingen we aan de wandel naar de wandelbrug over de Maas. Aan de overkant was een heleboel opgebroken dus moesten we goed op onze stappen letten. Op het Vrijthof aten we bij een brasserie en dat lieten we ons heel goed smaken. Na het eten wandelden we op ons gemakkie weer naar het hotel waar we natuurlijk weer een paar spelletjes hebben gekaart waarna we tegen twaalf uur naar bed gingen.

We stapten weer in de auto en reden naar Maastricht. Hier hebben we ook nog wat rondgebanjerd. We zijn o.a. naar het Vrijthof gegaan, waar we naar de St. Servaaskerk keken. Hier konden we aan de buitenkant helaas weinig van zien want ten eerste was er een kermis voor de deur en ten tweede werd de kerk zowel van binnen als van buiten opgeknapt. Wel konden we de schatkamers bezoeken die zeer de moeite waard waren.

The hotel is good and modern and at good location near shops. They have even a launge room, just great! The people are also verry friendly! When you walk outside of the hotel entrance you are immediate in the shopping area with many exclusive boutiques. You can also find the famous Dutch warehouses in this area. Also for a good quality dinner you are in Maastricht at the right spot. Beside our own restaurant Zes there are many different possibilities to go out varying from a bistro to a Michelin Star restaurant. We wish you a very pleasant stay with us, at hotel Derlon, were Maastricht hospitality is at its best

Started off the day with a quick stop by Achelse Kluis (see earlier journal entry) and then went down to Maastricht to see some of the sights I had seen on the bus tour in the snow in February.  Walked through the university area, past some of the old Roman ruins and along the city walls by the river.  Brief stop by Valkenburg on the way home...but alas, once again, too late to go into the castle ruins!

What shall I tell you? I don't like to write because I can't express myself good enough in English or Dutch. And besides that I don't like to make some people jealous with my stories about the meeting how great, fun, tremendous, enormous, fabulous et cetera it was. In The Netherlands, Selexyz is a chain of 40 bookstores. Normally, the word ‘chain’ means average service, mainstream stock only and uninteresting ‘ten a penny’ stores. None of this is true for Selexyz. Although…, the thought of bookstore chains also brings scenes from the movie ‘You’ve got mail’ to mind, where the lovely local ‘around the corner bookshop’ (run by Meg Ryan), is forced out off business by the Big Chain Bookstore, run by Tom Hanks. When it comes to Selexyz, in all honesty, one or two comparisons can justifiably be made. Most importantly, most Selexyz stores have an integrated coffee shop. And yes, the stack high top ten bestsellers do have a prominent position in the store. Here however, ends the similarity. Because, on the contrary to the bookstore in the film, many Selexyz shops are situated in the most beautiful buildings on the best locations of gorgeous cities. For example, there are one or more in The Hague, Utrecht, Amsterdam, Leiden and 's Hertogenbosch. Besides being housed in beautiful old buildings, Selexyz also has many campus stores near high schools and universities. Situated in an old (former) Dominican church, you’ll find the most beautiful of all Selexyz': Selexyz Dominicanen Maastricht. The church oozes an ambiance of devotion and contemplation, which perfectly complements the books. To give the books some room to breath, a modern structure has been erected to create two extra floors. The contrast between the old church and the high-tech structure is enormous, yet they go together so well. They each enhance the other’s beauty. Perhaps the best thing about the structure is that it leaves the church in tact. Besides a feast to the eyes, the added floors also provide a splendid opportunity to ‘study’ the church’s architecture. If you are not a clergy or a priest, chances are you’ve never seen the arches and windows this close. Carved in the centuries old sandstone building blocks, there is a rich history. Names, dates, declarations of love, it is all there. One of the more moving carvings I came across dated 1944, from an asylum seeker during World War II. The former apse combined with the ambulatory is the bookshop’s coffee corner. Although, being a semi circle, one can hardly call it a corner. The product range is trendy and international oriented, the prices are ridiculously expensive. Yet, this is no reason not to visit the bookstore. Coz even if you don’t read, or stronger: hate books, don’t drink coffee and you are an atheist, this place is definitely still worth a visit.
