Vianden (Luxembourgish: Veianen) is a commune with city status in the Oesling, north-eastern Luxembourg, with over 1,500 inhabitants. It is the capital of the canton of Vianden, which is part of the district of Diekirch. Vianden lies on the Our river, near the border between Luxembourg and Germany.

As of 2001, the town of Vianden, which lies in the east of the commune, has a population of 1,511. It is known for its impressive castle and beautiful location in the Our valley.

Vianden is one of Luxembourg's main tourist centres with large numbers of holidaymakers and local visitors at all times of the year. In particular, the recently restored castle set spectactularly on the rocks above the town has become a museum which traces its history and its links with the royal families of Europe back to the middle ages. Then there are links with Victor Hugo who visited Luxembourg in 1862 and 1865 and spent a longer period in Vianden in 1871. His sketches and letters can be seen in the museum located in the house where he stayed next to the bridge over the Our. There is also a museum of arts and crafts (Musée d'Art rustique) and a doll and toy museum (Musée de la Poupée et du Jouet).

But many people just visit Vianden to wander through its hilly, historic streets or as a centre for walking, camping or cycling in the north of Luxembourg. There is a pleasant cycle up the Sauer and Our valleys to Vianden and there are many signposted walks in the area.

During the summer months, a chairlift operates from the banks of the river in the lower part of the town taking you high above the castle with magnificent views over the landscape.

Vianden also has a number of annual events and celebrations. The most famous of these is the nut market in October when the local walnuts are on sale together with walnut cakes, walnut confectionary, walnut brandy and walnut liqueurs. The streets are completely packed with visitors and if you come by car, you should try to arrive before lunch unless you want a five kilometer walk to the town!

Finally, there is an interesting attraction a few kilometers to the north of Vianden, Europe's biggest hydro-electric pumping station which provides storage and generation systems to benefit from the cheaper electric power rates at night.

Coo, Luxembourg
Until the 18th C. the Amblève formed an enormous curve near the next village of Coo, where the arms of the river almost touched. The monks of Stavelot without ado pierced through this narrow place and there appeared two raging picturesque waterfalls which have become a major tourist attraction. People come every year to see the illuminations of the cascades and to enjoy the restaurants, the canoe trips and the amusement park "Télécoo" with a chair-lift to the viewpoint of the Montagne de Lancre.

Hier eenmaal aangekomen werd het eerst tijd voor een kopje koffie of thee met een stukje taart. Na deze kleine onderbreking die tevens als sanitaire stop werd gebruikt, liepen we een eind de berg op naar het daar gelegen kasteel. Deze was echt al schitterend verbouwd en gerestaureerd. Niet alleen het gebouw zelf maar ook aan het interieur was veel aandacht besteed. In één van de zalen troffen we de stamboom aan van de eerste bewoner van dit slot tot zijn nazaten van tegenwoordig waarbij wij tot onze verbazing Willem van Oranje tot en met Beatrix aantroffen.

Toen we weer buiten kwamen begon het net een beetje te regenen, maar daar smolten we niet van. Verder ging het dus weer. Op aanraden van Thea maakten we nog een kleine omweg naar Beaufort waar volgens haar ook nog een kasteel zou zijn, maar al wat we zagen was een doorsnee dorpje met gewone huisjes. Foutje Thea!

Ook vandaag was het druilerig weer, het was wel wat minder koud maar nog steeds erg vochtig. Na het ontbijt en het douchen gingen we toch maar weer op pad. Ons doel van vandaag was Vianden wat in Luxemburg ligt. Eerst moesten we een eind richting Bastogne en vanaf dit plaatsje vonden we de borden richting Diekirch wat iets voor Vianden ligt. Vanaf Bastogne hadden we een vreselijk mooie route te rijden. Allerlei bochtjes veel bergen en mooie uitzichten over de hellingen en de dalen.

Rond een uur of twaalf bereikten we Vianden en net dat we de auto parkeerden begon het vreselijk te regenen zodat we nog maar even bleven zitten en een koekje en wat te drinken namen. Toen de regen iets minder werd stapten we toch maar uit en liepen we naar het kasteel van Vianden. Dit kasteel is vreselijk gerestaureerd en wordt ook nog steeds gerestaureerd zodat we tijdens onze tocht van ruimte naar ruimte bijna altijd droog konden lopen. Ook waren er een aantal ruimtes ingericht met meubilair uit de verschillende eeuwen waarin dit kasteel dienst had gedaan als behuizing van de graven van Vianden. Ook de voorouders van ons eigen koninklijk huis zijn ooit graven geweest van dit gebied.
