The pirogue doesn't run on Sundays. Except we didn't find this out till we were already in remote Cacheu, err right. So to plan b, which didn't even exist until this point: overland. lovely friendly helpful park ranger showed us round some random statues of Portuguese generals dumped near the seafront and then pointed us in the direction of a bus. The bus driver drove up and down the road till the bus was full (ie everyone was suitably hot and squashed together) then we took a very bumpy dirt road through the Parque Naturel de Cacheu, with thousands of termite mounds, lots of stunning vegetation and some pretty red flowers. Got to a town where there was supposed to be onward transport but it didn't seem to exist, or more it existed but wouldn't leave till the bus was full and there weren't any people who wanted to go in the same direction as us

Guinea-Bissau has some of the most incredible, empty beaches I have ever seen. I biked down one of the palm-fringed beaches for two hours and never saw another person. I didn't have much time so I was only able to take the ferry to a couple of the islands in the Arquipelago dos Bijagos, but with more time you could reach some very remote islands.
