restaurants at City Gods temple markets Travel Reviews

Jun 02, 2004
A couple of restaurants in the markets area of the City Gods Temple in Shanghai.
The Green Wave (I am not sure this is its real English name, it is a literal translation of its Chinese name)  restaurant is in the photo, it's a big restaurant in the middle of the City Gods temple complex, you can't miss it, since it has all these photos of President Clinton dining there in the windows. It's supposed to be a good restaurant, but I did not eat there myself because it wasn't open yet when I got there. Instead, I got these really tasty Chinese buns with meat inside from another restaurant (Nan Xiang bun restaurant) across from the Green Wave restaurant. It's hard to miss because it's the one with a huge line snaking around forever from the takeout window. I stood in line for almost an hour to get the buns from the takeout window. One of the photos shows the window where you can see the buns being made and steamed in these bamboo steamers. You can also sit down and eat upstairs, but the scoop is the takeouts taste better! Another photo shows the locals eating the buns outside the restaurant so that's what I did too.

ferrarislaura says: Locale bello anche se un po' buio. Tavole apparecchiate in maniera carina. Cucina dello Yunnan squisita, davvero non il solito cinese. Unica pecca: troppo coriandolo fresco (difetto generale della cucina cinese, soprattutto shanghainese) in quasi tutti i piatti. Abbastanza caro per essere un ristora...
Chokk says: In Shanghai I just had to surrender because I actually had enough of the Shanghai kitchen - I needed some western food. My choise fell on Ruzzi in Fuzhou Rd. As soon as I entered I saw that I was not the only one with this idea - next to us where two Finish ladies attacking a pizza and some American...
