Unique experience Feb 23, 2013
It was advertised to be very pretty with a water slide on the island, kayaking, fishing service and stuff. The island was tiny. You can walk around the island within 10 minutes. There are about 4 semi-detached bungalows and a small camp ground. The 15 minute speed boat ride was pricey: 600k for a round trip. It can hold up to 6 people at a time, so if you go in groups, it will be cheaper. When we got to the island, we found out the water slide was broken for quite some time. The room is cheap (220k/ night). Here is the catch: the shower and the bathroom door don't work. The blanket looks dirty filled with a few hairs. No towels except previous guests' left towels. Toiletries included a skimpy tiny little soap bar and soaked boxes of toothbrushes. The room has two complimentary things: ants and spiders. We had literally killed a few spiders and kicked others out before settling down. We were given no room key and we didn't asked for one since we were the only guests there. You have to order food from the restaurant on the mainland. You need to know what you want for lunch and dinner and how many dishes as well as pay for them in advance because the chef and the waitress and the boat man will follow you to the island. There's a kitchen there but there's no food and they only make one trip for you, so use your judgement right. After serving you lunch and cooking you dinner, the chef and the waitress will leave you there with the boatman. There's one old couple living on the island. They are housekeepers cum dinner waiters. The service is minimal and they never smile. The staff were the noisiest arguing about their pay. They even brought us our leftovers we sent back to the kitchen for dinner right from the fridge cold. I don't think they speak English either. The fun thing is after dark you can only have 2 hours of free electricity. If you want more, you have to pay 45k/ hour. The electricity comes from a generator. At night, it's really windy and a bit chilly for me. I could hear leaves and branches fall on the roof then it became totally quiet around midnight. There's absolutely nothing you can do on the island except walking around. Our intention was to come here for a swim in Tri An river but the water wasn't warm and I wasn't sure what there was in the river. In a conclusion, we went all the way from HCM off the beaten track ran around it a few times (since it was quite easy to miss the sign) just to sleep well and eat "walking chicken" ( gà ta đi bộ ) quoted exactly as on the menu.
