a lot of people may go to the big venues to see a concert such as the Manchester Evening News Arena (MEN) which is where i work but if your want to see less commercial and smaller vvenues check out the academy which is part of the university of manchester. there are academys 1, 2 and 3 ranging in size. many famous people have played here from marilyn manson, muse, queens of the stone age to more recent events such as biffy clyro, css, head automatica and many many more.
the music is generally alternative, metal, rock, emo, electro, indie and can be suitable for all ages, under 18 gigs are usually specified. prices do not usually exceed £18. it is all relevant to the popularity of the band i guess.
the music box is also quite good for music but features more extreme ends of the music scale with hardcore, grime, drum and bass etc. the prices are resonable to get in but the alcohol is quite expensive around £3 for a can of red stripe or strong bow.
the apollo is also a good venue whch has recently featured the likes of Kings of Leon and AFI. the area it is situated in is not as accessable as the other venues and a taxi would probably be best as the area is not very desirable.
there are many other places for watching live gigs such as the night and day cafe in the northern quater of the city. the bars here are quite pricey but appeals to fashionistas, older couples and is a way of gettin away from the roudy student bars near the academy.
