I grew up in Lakeland, FL and lived on Indian Rocks Beach, FL for a year. Many people choose to retire in FL because A) It is obviously warm and there is no threat of dealing with snow. But also because B) FL has a lower cost of living for retirees. If you settle on FL, I would advise going to any of the coastal cities because at least you will have the sea breeze to help you deal with the FL heat which IS horrible in July and August. When you look at inland FL (like Lakeland) you have horrid heat, humidity and NO relief from the sea breeze - this is difficult for many people if you are not used to heat/humidity.
If I were going to retire, I would choose a community dwelling in Colorado/any of the western states. A community dwelling would cover all the snow shoveling irritations so, as you age, this would be taken care of for you AND you would be near the national parks. National parks often offer programs like "work camping" so you can park your RV in their campground for free and get paid a small salary for a few hours of work in their gift shop or cleaning the grounds. -Personally, I would probably just live full time in the RV and do work camping until I became ill or unable. But most people still like to have a home base. http://www.work-camping.com/ |
