Bahrain's reputation as a relatively liberal and modern Gulf state has made it a favourite with travellers in the region and an excellent introduction to the Middle East. It was once the seat of one of the great trading empires of the ancient world, and is evocative of the past.
Tourist brochures warn visitors away from the intensely hot summer months (early June to mid-September), when the sea is flat and vaporous, the cold tap runs hot and even the grass is too peppery to walk on. Yet, in many ways, this is Bahrain's most characterful time of the year: it's when you realise the importance of a wind tower, or a well in the desert, or a headscarf to keep out the hot, dry winds of a dust storm. If braving the extreme heat and humidity doesn't appeal, the best time to visit is November to March, avoiding Ramadan and Eid holidays, when an influx of Saudi tourists can make it hard to find a room.

On our way to Amman, Jordan, we had a 3-hour layover in Manama, Bahrain. Before this trip I had never even heard of this country! In their English-language newspaper, I learned that little Bahrain is striving to build tourism akin to Dubai levels (they better start building crazy shit like islands and ski lifts then). I also learned that the Bahrainese consume more energy per person than just about any other country. I think they are surpassed only by...Dubai.

First time in Bahrain and I wasn't really sure what's ahead of me. The purpose of the trip was to see my then-boyfriend (now ex obviously lol) who moved to Bahrain a couple of months before this trip. That was in June 05, mid-summer, it was so hot that my mind just couldn't be bothered to look around and savour the 'new' surroundings I was in. In my whole week there, I didn't get to see much of the place (as I said it was too hot to even peek out the window!); the only times I left ...
