Hearty, regional food in Dresden

When on a trip I always try to sample regional food. Here's a list for travellers to Dresden who want to follow suit and try some Saxon/German food, which is mostly hearty and filling. Oh, and of course we also brew beer here :-)

I cannot recall how often I ate here with friends or family. Schillergarten is your typical neighbourhood hangout place with hearty food, generous portions, nothing fancy but excellent quality. They serve regional/German food, have a nice wine list a…
  2. Expensive "Restaurants, Cafes & Food" in Dresden, Germany
As the name indicates this place is a Bavarian enclave in Dresden. They serve Bavarian specialties like Obatzter, Weißwurst, Leberkäse and of course all sorts of Paulaner beer, brewed in Munich. The ambience is typical Bavarian "gemütlich", muc…
  3. Expensive "Restaurants, Cafes & Food" in Dresden, Germany
One day when I met up with a friend of mine after work to chat and have a beer we decided we'd check out one of the more touristy places around the Church of Our Lady in the heart of the old town - Augustiner. The name stands for good beer, that's wh…
  4. Average priced "Restaurants, Cafes & Food" in Dresden, Germany
This is a typical microbrewery with restaurant. Hearty, simple food like pork knuckle with sauerkraut, tasty beer, live music (and not only oompah, but also Dixie Jazz, Boogie-Woogie etc.) and rustic ambience attract a mixed crowd of students, touris…
  5. Average priced "Restaurants, Cafes & Food" in Dresden, Germany
This place is overlooked by tourists so far. It's tucked away in a beautiful valley (Zschoner Grund) in the non-touristy western outskirts of Dresden. As the name indicates this was a mill, first mentioned in 1570 but probably going back to around 14…
  6. Cheap "Restaurants, Cafes & Food" in Dresden, Germany
The largest park in Dresden has a number of places to eat and drink - one of my favourites is the beergarden in the centre, just a few steps north of the pond by the Baroque Palais. The food is nothing to write home about - but the location is not to…
  7. Average priced "Restaurants, Cafes & Food" in Wachau, Germany
This restaurant in the northern outskirts of Dresden, right in the valley "Seifersdorfer Tal", is ideal for a short excursion to the countryside, to escape the busy city life. The buildings of the old mill were thoroughly restored 1991/92 and a re…
  8. Average priced "Restaurants, Cafes & Food" in Dresden, Germany
The restaurant Klosterschänke belongs to the Hotel Klosterhof, located in the picturesque district Altleubnitz, a former village that became part of the municipality Dresden but managed to preserve the rural ambience pretty well. The place is a form…
  9. Expensive "Restaurants, Cafes & Food" in Dresden, Germany
These restaurants are right next to the palace - actually in buildings that were parts of the palace complex, former economy buildings from the 18th/early 19th century. Nowadays a four-star hotel is here, they also run the restaurants. I have not …
  10. Expensive "Restaurants, Cafes & Food" in Dresden, Germany
Probably the best known (not necessarily best quality) regional beer is Radeberger, owned by the Dr. Oetker group. In the past, especially during the communist era, it was very popular and also really very good. I (and many other locals) find that th…
  11. Average priced "Restaurants, Cafes & Food" in Dresden, Germany
Watzke is a microbrewery with home in Dresden-Pieschen (northwestern outskirts). They opened two restaurants in the city centre a while ago, this review is about the one in the inner Neustadt district, on pedestrian zone Hauptstrasse, right next to t…
  12. Cheap "Restaurants, Cafes & Food" in Dresden, Germany
This restaurant is located in the middle of the Dresden Heath, on the only road that goes through (Dresden - Radeberg). I stopped here for lunch when I did a cycling tour through the Heath with a friend. It's a historic building, inside renovated in …
  13. Average priced "Restaurants, Cafes & Food" in Dresden, Germany
This relatively new restaurant is located on Schillerplatz square, in the eastern residential district Dresden-Blasewitz. There are lots of restaurants and cafés in the area, one of my favourites (Schillergarten) is across the street. We just wanted…
