Karratha is a large industrial town which pretty much centres around 3 major industries: The North West Shelf Gas Project, which is the countries largest natural gas development; Dampier Salt - which is the world's largest salt mining development; Rio Tinto Iron Ore: one of the world's largest iron ore processors.

As such the town is pretty much focused on work, and not so much on tourism.

The Dampier Archipelago is located just north of Karratha and can be accessed best from a smaller town called Dampier. This is a collection of over 40 islands and home to some fantastic beaches and terrific fishing.

The Burrup peninsula, just north of Karratha is also home to some ancient Aboriginal rock art and is easily accessible. There are also some nice secluded beaches, and with a 4WD car you can progress even further.

Karratha isn't an ideal tourist destination but is an important rest point on any journey passing through.

It's also a good location to shop and stock up on supplies of all types. The shopping hours are also very convenient, to cater to the large number of shift workers in the town.

Karratha has only a few hotels, many motels, and a large caravan park.

The Pilbara is a huge region in the north west of Western Australia. It's home to some of the oldes land formations on the planet. Plenty of desert but surrounded by the some of the cleanest, most beautiful and isolated beaches to be found. This was my home for over 2 years.

Sorry for not writing for so long but have been busy working and traveling. After Leaving Karratha we went to Karajini NP for 4 days. It was Magnificent. Of course some funny things happened to the Coite family on this trip. Ranging being chased out of camp by wild pigs,Swimming with snakes and Dingoes stealing our rubbish in the middle of the night. It just would not be the same if everything went to plan would it now ?

At last 3 month or so after arriving we are going to leave Karratha. We are not getting too excited however because we tried to leave a week ago and low and behold, more car trouble The gods of Karratha do not want us to go.. any way one more week of work and that paid for the CV joints and we will be leaving for Karajini on Wednesday. We will miss all the friends we have made and want to thank everyone for putting up with us for so long.
