Jeddah is the major urban center of western Saudi Arabia with about 4 Million inhabitants. It is located on the coast of the Red Sea and is Saudi Arabia's second largest city. Other than Riyadh, Jeddah has a long history. It dates back about 2500 years and has always been the center of the Hijaz region.

The biggest fountain in the world stands in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). The height of jets of this unique construction named after King Fahd is 312 meters. Two high-powered pumps throw 625 liters per second at the speed of 375 kilometers per hour at a immense altitude. The total mass of water suspended over the fountain is about 18.8 tons. The fountain and its utility lines are under the computer system control.

I visited Saudi Arabia as part of the U.S. Department of State and The Kennedy Center's Jazz Ambassadors Program in 2003. This cultural exchange program sends a small number of quartets out to areas where the United States doesn't have a strong presence. Saudi Arabia is one on the nine countries we visited in seven weeks. The other countries where Egypt,Moracco,Jordan,Syria, United Arab Emirates, India and Turkey.
