El Mochilero – Trujillo Jun 25, 2016
El Mochilero Hostel is located in inner ring of Trujillo, easily walkable central area, close to most of the markets and shops and some bus companies. Main walking street is just a block away and there you can find good cheap restaurants, some bakeries and cevicherias, and most importantly bunch of CASINOS… I have no idea who goes to 6-7 casinos that are all close to each other, but I don’t think that they can survive solely on local gamblers.

This is the only Hostel in this area, but there are many small hotels all around (prices for hotels are totally affordable and better deal than hostel. Most of the hostels are actually on the beach in the town Huanchaco which is 15 minutes away. El Mochilero is exactly like many people described it in the chats and blogs: “hostel with lots of potential”, but very little accomplished… Thinks that I don’t like about it are that they do not have enough power plugs anywhere (and that few that they have are located in hard to reach places) and also there are only three restrooms for around 50 beds (there was only around 15 people in hostel while I was there). Front doors are huge wooden old heavy doors that are always closed, so you have to ring and wait for someone to open. Luckily they have a dog that barks every time someone rings, so they get alarmed even if they don’t hear you… Dog is one of those ugly Peruvian bold with Mohawk, tongue on the side dogs, but she is very sweet. Anyway, those doors are really annoying. Door of my dorm could not close and they have foot long turtle that would go for your toes if you are not careful. I did not ask for turtle’s name but I guess that turtles do not respond if you call them. They have two internet wifi spots and front one allows only few websites and back one is fairly ok. There is no breakfast but markets are close by and food is too good to skip and eat continental breakfast… Dorm is only 25s and “private” room is 50s. Privates are crap and not worth any money.

They have bar with good variety of drinks and they also serve breakfast that ranges from 5-10 soles.

My dorm had 11 beds that are pretty comfortable but lockers are total crap. You can open those lockers by touching them with little finger. Security is pretty good because front door are always closed and few guys that work there are always around. There are some security cameras but I did not see monitors. Their reservation system still works with notebook and written names which brings a bit of confusion when you are trying to pay or add days to your stay.

Bathrooms are clean and they do have shower heads that worm up the water. Back courtyard has nice hammocks and that’s the place most of the people hang around during the day. There is small kitchen area which you can use and also there is a refrigerator.

It is way better to go to Huanchaco and stay in a good hostel next to the sea. This place is alright for one day and if you don’t want to bother with moving around while waiting for next bus.
