Most Memorable Travel Experience
Renting a car in Cologne and driving to Ypres.... or at least attempting to get there with the worst directions ever! (Don't ever use Mapquest -- it's the devil.) Then, once we finally got to Ypres, we attempted to follow Lonely Planet's battlefield and monument tour in the reverse order -- but without the book and no good map.

I also consider requesting a grant to do research in Monaco -- and then getting the money -- one of my proudest travel achievements. Let's be honest -- it's not cheap there, but what a great four days! Now, if only I can find a long-term project where I can spend the winter in Monaco.....

Being a Ph.D. student has its perks -- like getting to travel every year on other people's money :-) The joy of studying European history....

Beijing is interesting. The Chinese have tried to put on a great Olympics, but they've sort of "sanitized" the city. I'm sure the Beijing that I'm seeing is nothing like it normally is. Went to the Summer Palace the other day, and hope to get a chance to see The Great Wall if I can get away from the tennis courts one of these days. What are you up to these days?

The Life of a PhD Student
Jul 09, 2007 - Aug 12, 2008
Grad students have no time or money.... and yet history students manage to include some pretty awesome trips alongside their "research". Here's what I do when not staring at old pieces of paper in dusty archives.
