Koh Smaui , Thailand. Apr 27, 2008
First of all do not even consider leaving without worldwide travel health insurance.I said to myself "oh I'll never need this...." Was I wrong !

Dengue fever. It's not a lot of fun.Thailand in general is covered with mossies-like anywhere you might say.But some have a little extra kick.
Try to avoid anywhere that has water collected in old tyres or containers etc - these are the perfect breeding ground for the mosquito.I stayed in Coconut resort in Lamai beach, Koh Samui and two of our travelling party ended up hospitalised for days. Not only is it a very debilitating illness it can be nasty i.e you can get a condition called 'deadness' which will invariably put a rather sudden stop to your holiday.
The hospital I was hotelling at, had 35 cases in 6 months, with one unlucky soul passing on.
There is no cure for this - it's a virus. It makes you feel very unpleasant to say the least and scavenges your blood platelet count (your ability to form clots in compromised - so those who die,die from internal bleeding)
Pretty serious topic I know but worth considering all the same.
Some tips to avoid:
1 : Coat youself in repellant (then slide out to the clubs!)
2 : Stay away from places that don't have running water (toilet flush)
3 : Ideally find accomm. on fourth floor of a building ( mosquitos are afraid of heights)
4 : Wear a bio-hazard suit (chicks really love 'em)
Be well !

all you need to worry about when visiting these islands are
1. electricty , the currents over here are not safe so dont use it unless for a short amount of time and are in a resort
2 . tap water , don't drink it!,not safe could lead to poisoning, buy bottled water only
3.must have injections before going!
4. only swim in safe waters!, jellyfish and sharks will appear if you dont swim safely!

hope this was helpful!
