Goa during monsoon season -- still worth going?

Greetings and salutations, fellow travelers :-)

I will be in India at the end of June for a work gig, and I was thinking of checking out Goa for a few days before I start work.

Of course, this is during the monsoon season, and I understand that the area is fairly deserted during this time, with many restaurants and bars being closed.

Is Goa still worth a look during the rainy season?   I'm not big into partying, and just hanging out and absorbing some atmosphere is just fine.  However, I'd rather not be washed away in a flood. :-)

Thoughts?

Thanks!
Brian

Re: Goa during monsoon season -- still worth going?

YES

most beach-side hotels will be closed
local flooding and inundation in many areas
communication by road / train may become difficult due to excessive rains
surf at high-tide  would become dangerous

BUT

you will get solitude
low prices
clean air
overcast often
windy often
hot and muggy when not raining

just my kind of place,
a reminder:  a lot of  locals continue to live in those areas even when most of the tourists are gone

Re: Goa during monsoon season -- still worth going?

You have chosen a great timing for visiting Goa as June is the month of fall monsoon and it can give a break from scorching heat of the summer. During this time of the year you may not have the privileged of partying and enjoy beach view and shinning sun and surfing but you can enjoy the calmness and serenity of the place. For me from June to Feb is the great month to explore Goa. So enjoy your stay.......  smile

Re: Goa during monsoon season -- still worth going?

Any recommendations for what part of North Goa would be best to stay during monsoon?  So far I've found some hotels I like near Calangute and Candolim.

I'm looking for an area that will have some good restaurants and bars nearby.  I'm not big into the party scene -- I just enjoy being able to kick back with a few beers and great food and soak up some atmosphere.   Being right along the beach is not essential either.

Thanks in advance!

I stayed in Anjuna during July one year, and it was pretty low volume in terms of travelers. It was nice for a couple days after Mumbai, and I had Chapora fort to myself when I checked it out.  Most of the beach front stuff was closed, however.  A few decent restaurants were open, and the area was beautiful. Met some people who stayed in Baga and said it was a bit more happening during that time.

I have to say, it isn’t that bad in Goa. yes you can visit GOA during the mansoon season. Monsoon is Goa is actually something that I look forward to. All through the winter we party and have fun at the beach, by April I’m ready for the tourists to leave, then May rolls around and it’s so hot you don’t want to step outside. You start to hope monsoon comes early. By the end of the month the rain hits… although it doesn’t cool you down as much as you’d think.

If you want to visit Goa during monsoon season is not safe because you cannot enjoy the beaches during monsoon. Plan your trip in the month of Dec to March, it would be safe to visit and you can enjoy your trip.

Hi briant 13,
It's not true that the restaurants/bars are closed. Well some of them maybe but most are in business. It's the best time to visit to avoid warm weather.

Absolutely, I went in August just when the Monsoon was starting to subside. It's a lot cheaper and less crowded too.

I've written a blog about the whole experience on my website but this is my first post so I cant include links sad

There’s something truly magical about Goa during the monsoon. The rainy season means that Goa is taking a break from the busy tourist season and this is a perfect opportunity for you to put your feet up along with the locals as well.

Averages for Goa in June, after May, the hottest month of the year, things start to cool down in Goa, India in June, when the monsoon season is just beginning. Goa is subject to a relatively high amount of rainfall in June.

As you mentioned you are not partying guy, then you should go with the local beauty of Goa. Scuba diving at Grande Island in Goa, Dolphin Ride, Go for backwater Kayaking, Snorkeling, Parasailing, Canyoning, and the most amazing Dudhasagar Waterfall.

Re: Goa during monsoon season -- still worth going?

Just because its monsoon doesn’t mean you won’t get sun and beach time. It rains for hour’s straight sometimes, but then can clear up and allow for a nice day. It’s still nice and hot. The best part is the green lush tropical vibe, everything is wet, fresh and clean.
