Travel Related Yes/No votes for photos - What you should know!

Photos on TravBuddy can be voted Yes/No as to whether they are 'Travel Related'. What does this mean? I encourage all members to have a look at my TravBuddy-102 guide, Part 9:

Travel Related Photos

It is a short part in the guide and will not take long to read, but will explain what the Travel Related Photo means and offers some brief guidance on using the Yes/No voting option.

There are long time TravBuddy members who sometimes use the Travel Related vote for a photo, almost exclusively in the affirmative (Yes). Other TravBuddy members don't use it at all. We also have many new members from the now closed VirtualTourist (VT) site that may or may not have used the Travel Related vote for photos yet. This forum post seemed a good idea go over the Travel Related photo concept.

TravBuddy has some differences than VT did in approach to travel content. As VT was more review/tip oriented rather than a blogging platform, there was a more professional style to reviews/tips in offering relevant details and objective impressions for guidance to others. Here on TravBuddy there are reviews like that too, but the general style tends to be more oriented towards personal impressions and story telling, with less emphasis on details sometimes. TravBuddy reviewers may even include personal photos of themselves in reviews. Of course, TravBuddy is a blogging & review platform, so there is often overlap between the reviews and blogs in style. Travbuddy bloggers, especially, include many personal photos of themselves. On TravBuddy, people are mostly telling stories (in review or blog), many of them personal ones, and the photos displayed reflect that.

With all that said, and assuming the Travel Related Photos entry in the TravBuddy-102 guide has been read, what do you need to know?

1.) The Yes/No vote affects the photo rankings in the overview travel pages here on TravBuddy, and impact that ranking much more than a smile does. A No vote can badly damage a photo ranking, so be careful with it.

2.) In my opinion the No vote should never be used. Rare exceptions might be a spammer photo (advertisement, company logo or salesmen) and inappropriate photos (nudity, graphic or offensive).

3.) In my opinion the Yes vote is under used and should be applied more often than it is. This doesn't imply to go crazy with it either, voting every photo in a blog/review as Travel Related. Choose the ones you personally like best or think most representative of a destination. It's not always best quality of photo that matters either, but something that appeals to you or portrays something that reflects a destination well.

4.) Spending time in the travel overviews for destinations is a good way to see how other TravBuddies have smiled or given Travel Related votes. From here one may find other photos they like (not necessarily the top ones) and use their own discretion in voting them up with smiles & Travel Related votes. This helps promote diversity in perspectives from a variety of different members. Be fair about it though, and don't just smile/vote exclusively for one member, but also don't just smile/vote around certain members excluding them entirely.

I have also put some information regarding photo & blog rankings in the TravBuddy-102 guide, Part 10:

Did You Know?

Look at #5 and #7 there, which are relevant here, but the others are of interest too. Again, these are meant for informational purposes to understand better how TravBuddy does what it does. It's never a good idea to use such knowledge to try to game the system or abuse it in a way to harm any members travel content. Try to be fair and balanced, and know that your input matters and reflects on the site in the way things are displayed and offered here. Like many things on TravBuddy, the community is in control to some extent. How you choose to interact with members travel content (in smiles, comments, Travel Related photo votes and helpful/trustworthy votes for reviews) affects what other members see, and this is particularly relevant with regards to the travel overviews of destinations.

In short, be aware, play fair, contribute to the site, interact as you like, enjoy and have fun!

Remember, I am just a member, and offer my TravBuddy-101 and TravBuddy-102 guides as I saw best to help all members understand/use the site, and they are not official Admin guides. I am always open to feedback on changes or edits to them in wording or content. Go to the forum thread devoted to these guides to offer any feedback you may wish to share, even if just to say you like them. That's useful to others also! It is always at the top to the TravBuddy Help & Feedback forum topic in a 'sticky' thread to easily find it. Here is a direct link:

Re: Travel Related Yes/No votes for photos - What you should know!

What I find a bit muddling, as one of those new exVT members, is that I can vote for how travel related a photo is AND/OR smile at it, and these options aren't in the same place - one above and one below the image. Because the vote thing is at the top and the smile down below by the comment box, I tend to mostly only use the smile to show I like a photo. It seems a bit over the top to do both, but now I understand that voting yes carries more weight I'll try to do this more when I come across good photos

I agree with you.
I tend to only smile and not go up and vote.
If I do vote, it is always yes.  If I think a photo is not travel related, I will just leave it alone.
The whole travel related thing is subjective anyways.
Some will say that a photo of the Eiffel Tower is travel related, but then the same photo with a family posing in front is not.
I think both photos are travel related.

Thanks for raising this on the VT Facebook page I didn't realise the full implications and will now start using the Yes vote.

I agree with Jeremy. Although I am quite new to the site but using now more often during my free time and more or less now a days it has become a sort of hobby for me to check the updates and reply them. Idea is that so far I have hardly found anything discriminating on the site. We all are responsible to keep this awesome community alive and interesting so why offend somebody unless there is something which may spoil the whole community. I strongly believe that pictures showing family and friends at good place is travel related. Before joining TravBuddy I never saw my own city the way I look at it now. Earlier going to the main shopping place in the city was not travel related but now after being at Travbuddy it is. There are plenty of people who visit my city and my photos and reviews of those places are helpful to them. My only point is why give a negative vote to a review or photo if it is not promoting / advertising / endorsing / trying selling product. If it is not porn or anything which may hurt the sentiments of any body.
I strongly believe that admin should plan something that the rating of a photo should not affect based on the negative voting rather negative votes are viewed at Admin level or community leaders level and they decide that the particular photo should remain on the site or needs to be removed.

Re: Travel Related Yes/No votes for photos - What you should know!

Thanks for telling about the votes, Brian.
I have never really understood what that Yes/No Travelrelated vote is good for, as most pictures on Travbuddy are travel related 😊
Once a TB-friend of mine told me that a No-vote had gone off by mistake on one of my pics and my friend was very sorry for that.
Maybe, if the vote has that big impact on a pic, it would be good with an Undo-option? So that you can regret if you vote No by mistake... Or at least there could come up a question "do you really want to vote yes or no" before the vote is final..

Lucky you Ilse that you weren't hit by no votes. Dozens of my travel related pics were marked "no" because someone mistook Travbuddy with Virtualtourist.

Oh No, EmyG. I'm sorry to hear that! yikes

Then it's very good with this information, and let's hope that there will be no more "No"-marks!
Maybe I've avoided the No-marks as I haven't updated any blogs lately. hmm

Hopefully if members read this thread, at least there will be better understanding, assuming some of the No votes are not being done with malicious intent.

Re: Travel Related Yes/No votes for photos - What you should know!

A very basic question since I did not pay much attention to this feature earlier.

Once I have posted many photos "How Can I Know" that somebody has voted Negatively on my Photo?

Re: Travel Related Yes/No votes for photos - What you should know!

You can't really know who as it is a blind vote. As for which photos, you will see something like this above the photo:

0/1 TravBuddy thinks this photo is travel related
1/2 TravBuddy thinks this photo is travel related

Like that.

If there are any further questions/comments regarding travel related photo voting, ask away. Since forum posts on TravBuddy are closed after 90 days, thought I'd give a bump here for additional questions and/or discussion on this topic.
