Re: Placename Songs (Around the World)

Staying with that theme, perhaps we should pay tribute to Slim Whitman, who passed away last week at the age of 90:

By the Waters of Minnetonka - Slim Whitman
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ze-CyzJsCyw

Minnetonka, Minnesota. The word "Minnetonka" comes from the Dakota Indian mni tanka meaning "great water".

Rest in Peace, Slim, and you were quite the yodeller!

Re: Placename Songs (Around the World)

Good one, Francis, and apropos in title given the time of year for America! Today is the 4th of July (Celebrating American Independence) so I extend the thought in return with an Irish tune in honor of the 4th of July!

The Irish Rover - The Pogues with the Dubliners
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=au30c9ZMIPg

Sing along... ha ha

On the Fourth of July, 1806
We set sail from the sweet Cove of Cork
We were sailing away with a cargo of bricks
For the Grand City Hall in New York
'Twas a wonderful craft
She was rigged fore and aft
And oh, how the wild wind drove her
She stood several blasts
She had twenty seven masts
And they called her The Irish Rover

We had one million bags of the best Sligo rags
We had two million barrels of stones
We had three million sides of old blind horses hides'
We had four million barrels of bones
We had five million hogs
six million dogs
Seven million barrels of porter
We had eight million sides of old nanny goate tails
In the hold of the Irish Rover

There was awl Mickey Coote
Who played hard on his flute
And the ladies lined up for a set
He would tootle with skill
For each sparkling quadrille
Though the dancers were fluther'd and bet
With his smart witty talk
He was cock of the walk
As he rolled the dames under and over
They all knew at a glance
When he took up his stance
That he sailed in The Irish Rover

There was Barney McGee
From the banks of the Lee
There was Hogan from County Tyrone
There was Johnny McGurk
Who was scared stiff of work
And a man from Westmeath called Malone
There was Slugger O'Toole
Who was drunk as a rule
And Fighting Bill Tracy from Dover
And your man, Mick McCann
From the banks of the Bann
Was the skipper of the Irish Rover

For a sailor its' always a bother in life
It's so lonesome by night and by day
That he longs for the shore
and a charming young whore
Who will melt all his troubles away
Oh, the noise and the rout
Swillin' poiteen and stout
For him soon the torment's over
Of the love of a maid he is never afraid
An old salt from the Irish Rover

We had sailed seven years
When the measles broke out
And the ship lost its way in the fog
And that whale of a crew
Was reduced down to two
Just myself and the Captain's old dog
Then the ship struck a rock
Oh Lord! what a shock
The bulkhead was turned right over
Turned nine times around
And the poor old dog was drowned (1,2,3!)
I'm the last of The Irish Rover

That's quite a lot, and guess I should add the singalong version too:

Enjoy!

You do like musicals, Andy, eh? Here's another from 'The Music Man' - one of my favorite musical intros:

Rock Island Song - music, and lyrics by Meredith Willson
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ9U4Cbb4wg

I was never quite sure what the title of this song had to do with the film itself actually, but there is a 'Rock Island' in Illinois on the border with Iowa. Although the film opens in a train station at Brighton, Illinois (the sign is visible on the train platform as the film starts), in the original play the train departs from Rock Island, IL to Iowa. I suspect it is just a mistake in the film that went unnoticed perhaps. Maybe it's just part of the Rock Island Railroad. Anyway, seemed relevant enough to include here. It's a funny tune and great start to the film "The Music man" (1962).

Take a look at the video clip and you'll "get" Iowa Stubborn, Brian. smile Professor Harold Hill has stopped in River City, Iowa, for his next maching band sales pitch. The Iowa folk immediately proceed to give him a hard time about everything from the pronounciation of Iowa (I-O-WAH vs. I-O-WAY) to the weather. But, the story of the show is that Professor Hill charms the stubborn Iowans and wins them over.

Rock Island refers to the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad (The Rock Island Line), not Rock Island, IL. In the unaccompanied song the vocal rhythms depict the movement and sounds of a train.

Presumably Professor Hill has just left Rock Island, Illinois, having been run out of town, and is crossing Iowa on the CRI&P Rock Island-Omaha main line. When other (honest) traveling salesmen discover him on board, he gets off at River City, a fictitious small town along the way. River City is meant to be "anytown", USA. (Much the same as Main Street at Disneyland is also meant to be anytown, USA, but is based on Walt Disney's hometown of Marcelline, Iowa. The two small town presentations have much in common.)

Yes, as you can tell, The Music Man is one of my favorite musicals!
