Most Liberal European Countries

What are some of the European Countries with the most liberal views?

What is the situation in Croatia? would that be a good place to explore?

Re: Most Liberal European Countries

I'm not sure I would associate Croatia as a country of Europe with the most liberal views (think Scandinavia for that).

However, I'm not sure what that would have to do with whether Croatia is a good place to explore.

To be honest, almost all of Europe is fairly liberal. I don't think it'll make much difference where you go.

Re: Most Liberal European Countries

Liberal views on what?  The UK is pretty liberal on sex, but tougher on drugs - I guess it varies?

Re: Most Liberal European Countries

Yeah that is true , liberal can have many meanings. Like in many arabic countries having a beer is really really bad stuff, and grounds for imprisonment in some places , whilst you can`t even go to a tea shop without people smoking hash.
Norway is pretty liberal in generla , not many things are frowned upon there...

Most of europe is Christian, which is quite liberal in general (exluding catholic) .I think Crotia is a mix of mostly catholics , and 1% muslims. There was`nt any issues when I was there..people were partying, drinking , and girls were sunbathing with their perks showing smile

An interesting viewpoint. Catholicism is  the branch of Christianity with the most adherents in Europe, so there is an apparent contradiction there. Croatia is as you say mostly if not overwhelmingly Catholic and  certainly from a tourist's point of view, is as liberal socially as anywhere else.

Re: Most Liberal European Countries

It's an interesting question.  In many internet contexts re the USA, "liberal" seems to mean gay-friendly.

In Europe, some parts of a country may be much more liberal than others; example:  northern Germany vs. Bavaria.

Re: Most Liberal European Countries

Denmark is also very liberal in every sense...

You can drink in the streets and be drunk in public as long you don't cause trouble
You can be openly gay without anyone would lift an eyebrow
Hash can be bought  in all over Christiania. It's still illigal but will only cause a warning or small fine if caught. Same with other drugs (for own use) although it'll give somewhat bigger fines.
Girls can sunbathe topless not only on the beach but also in parks...

Only thing here that's not liberal here is our political system big_smile

Yep.  Catholicism is a branch of Christianity - not all christians are catholics, but all catholics are at least theoretically christian.  Lets not get tangled up in whether or not people are practicing, acting in a "christian" manner - that way flame wars lie!

Agreed.

As you indicate in post 5, it is difficult to know on what areas Original poster asks the question. In any event, insofar as this thread is concerned, I agree with Luke's post 4.

Re: Most Liberal European Countries

The post from the OP is fairly broad and essentially combines two random questions but I think Ambershee hit it on the head.

ambershee wrote:

Oh and Catholics are most definitely Christians.

You're ok in Croatia & neighborhood unless you happen to look like Gypsy. I got taken as Gypsy in Bosnia & Croatia and got kinda unpleasant treatment, especially in Bosnia.

Re: Most Liberal European Countries

Having lived in the Netherlands for a few months, I found that outside the Randstad (the area between Rotterda, the Hague, Amsterdam and Utrecht) it was exactly as liberal as the UK - no more, no less.  You still heard racist and homophobic comments, and some people disaproved of other people, but most people were cool.  Even inside that area, there was a fair bit of anti-Turkish sentiment that some people were happy to speak openly about, in English, and expect you to agree with.  So no, I don't think it's any more liberal than the UK.

Re: Most Liberal European Countries

Portugal is a very liberal country smile

We have the most liberal drug law in Europe, you can drink in the streets and get drunk on it, we allowed same sex-marriage, we have legal abortion, our society is full of gypsies, black people, chinese and east people and it's OK for us, since no one cause troubles, but troubles can be made by anyone, right?! We have specific nudist beaches, for people who enjoy it.

I use to say we are the tropical country of Europe since we have excellent weather. We are in the peak of winter and the sun is shining for days smile

Just to come to Portugal smile)

Depends, what are we comparing Europe too? Saudi Arabia? In that case, everywhere's liberal as hell. Canada? Probably not too much variance.

Re: Most Liberal European Countries

the most liberal countries that i have experienced so far is Definately The Netherlands at one, and Belgium also seemed a little bit. compared to the U.S. i think most of europe is more liberal. and the question about croatia... you should definately see this country. it is one of the most beautiful in all of europe, and everything is less expensive compared to the western countries like italy, france, germany, england, etc.

Re: Most Liberal European Countries

One of the most liberal country in Europe is Bulgaria.
People there just don't like to be told what to do by someone else.
It is not popular in Bulgaria to forbid things.
They've had enough of 45 years of communism.
I think Bulgaria is on the same level as the Netherlands.
Skandinavian countries( except Iceland and Finland) recently disapointed everyone how did they handle
Jullian Assange and Piratebay cases.
They seem to duck in front of US.
Germany,Austria,Estonia,Slovenia,Finland,Iceland,Switzerland are liberal too.
As well as Slovakia,Czech republic,Lithuania,Latvia,Russia,Ukraine.
Don't know about Romania and Hungary.
