Useful websites for travellers

These are some of the most useful websites I use on my travels:

For meeting and exchanging info with fellow travellers:

www.travbuddy.com

www.couchsurfing.com

For general info about destinations:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

http://wikitravel.org/en/Main_Page

http://www.roughguides.com/

http://www.routard.com/ (in French)

http://en.arrivalguides.com/

For currency conversion:

http://www.oanda.com/currency/converter/

To know the time anywhere in the world:

http://www.timeanddate.com/

For rail travel in Europe and the world, includes links to national railways in countries in Europe and the world:

http://www.seat61.com/

The German Federal railsite is very good as it provides a timetable for all trains in Europe. Just enter your start and arrival points and the desired date and time of travel (works in English, German and a number of other languages):

http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml

For mapping, GPS and navigation (works in many languages):

http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/ … mePage.htm

For air travel to and from Ireland and in Europe:

http://www.aerlingus.com/cgi-bin/obel01 … /index.jsp

http://www.ryanair.com/site/IE/

http://www.aerarann.com/

Others will know of other useful sites so maybe they can add them here.

Re: Useful websites for travellers

This was my holy grail for light backpacking.  I used this to prepare my first solo, overland, weeks long trip and it was wonderful..  a great "how to" guide to get started in independent travel.

LOVE this site.

Re: Useful websites for travellers

I find the Roughguides site and the Routard  sites much better than the Lonely Planet one as they provide most if not all of the information that it is the book. I have the impression with Frommers and Fodors that they are more geared to big spenders but maybe I'm wrong.

Re: Useful websites for travellers

I don't usually book accommodation in advance, and if I do, I do it over the phone but these are the two sites I mostly use for booking:

www.booking.com

www.hostelworld.com

I prefer booking.com as you do not have to pay a deposit and often allows you to cancel up to the day of arrival without penalty (but check carefully the conditions applying to your particular booking before you confirm it).

Re: Useful websites for travellers

Some of the ones I use on a regular basis have already been mentioned, but they are...

www.wikipedia.com
www.wikitravel.org
whc.unesco.org

Specifically on wikitravel.org, I often frequent the following page for discount airlines in Europe...

www.wikitravel.org/en/Discount_airlines_in_Europe

For lodging...

www.hotels.com
www.booking.com

For currency...

www.oanda.com/currency/converter
www.xe.com

Re: Useful websites for travellers

I use:

www.kayak.com , www.orbitz.com and www.momondo.com to search for cheap flights.

And always wikipedia as the first place for general information - at the bottom of the wiki-page there is usually a list of sources for you to move on to.

Re: Useful websites for travellers

@sinehn. As regards cheap flights, I nearly always find the cheapest flights on the airline's websites.

From Ireland to Europe,  that means Aer Lingus, Ryanair and Aer Arran.  While Aer Lingus is quoted on flight booking websites such as the ones you mention and expedia.com, travelocity.com and opodo.com, budget airlines such as Ryanair are often not. For Aer Lingus, the fares quoted on its website can often be the same or indeed a lot cheaper than those quoted on flight booking websites.

For destinations outside, and sometimes in, Europe, I second the_Bill's suggestion of searching wikipedia or wikitravel for budget airlines in your arrival or departure country.

Another trick I use is to look at the website of the departure airport and see which airlines fly from there to my destination and then check through those airlines' websites for fares.

Just come across this one. It seems like couchsurfing, except that you pay. Should weed out the freeloaders aka students:

Francis deserves a genius award! Thanks for the airbnb.com just what I was looking for!

Good resource for any cruise related questions:  http://www.cruisecritic.com/
Good place for checking reviews on hotels/attractions/cities, helpful forums and lists- reviews should be taken with a grain of salt:  http://www.tripadvisor.com/

Thanks Jennica. I do not particularly like tripadvisor and would  take anything there with an extremely largely grain of salt.

Re: Useful websites for travellers

Hi Francis,

For those who want to keep in touch while travel - there is a very useful roaming portal with the most complete listing of roaming/communication links and much more!

I have worked for 4 years in Telecom and know for sure that there is no central database where travellers can get information about roaming! Well, the portal is not only about roaming, besides roaming tips for GSM/GPRS & CDMA,  we list other useful links like wi-fi spots, sim-cards, satellite providers and some useful travel links as well!

Let me know what you think...and I can add the link to it into this forum.

Cheers!
Lenka

Not necessarily useful but certainly cool: http://myskystatus.com/

While you're in the air, MySkyStatus sends altitude, location, departure and arrival updates automatically to your Facebook and Twitter pages.

Thanks to travbuddy jockchristie for this.

Re: Useful websites for travellers

I've already mentioned wikitravel, but to be more specific, it has a very comprehensive and interesting article on Round the World Travel, which I have only just discovered.
