now this lighthouse was a very tall one and no direct driving to it. you had to walk almost a mile to it. so from an observation deck almost a mile away i took these pics. on this day it was a bit windy and someone was flying a kite next to the lighthouse. the pixs i took of it came out great, just right now i cant find the kite pic next to the light. but if i ever get a chance to go back, i certainly will go and climb it
At 89 feet this stone tower was built in 1827 and fitted with 14 oil lamps. in the 1850's it was important enough to have a more powerful light. so the old tower was torn down and replaced with a new167 ft brick tower. a stone double keepers house was also built with both tower and house placed on a flagstone terrace. a 1st order fresnel lens 1st took light in nov 1858. to this day the light is still an active naigation aid to ships. on a clear day you can see the Empire State Building from the top as this light is open to the public. |
