Interests
Prefer hiking and cycling to get around, but trains and boats also good.
I'm a terrible piano player and torture my neighbours regularly.
I still think I can cook, but I've noticed friends disagree.
I don't know how it happened, but I can now enjoy a good 5-day cricket test match.
Have 2 talkative African grey parrots, but pining for a huge, energetic dog and a fat, lazy cat.
I'm doing improvements to a house in Cape Town, but slowly destroying the flat I live in.
I lectured in economics at the university here, but am fed up with writing useless papers so am starting a business combining academics and travel for study abroad and local scholarship funding.
I'd love to rally investors around some profitable ideas for improving life in SA - having a crack at that when I go to the US later this year.
It's time I wrote rather than read another book. Books you might find in my backpack
Lately into Indian and Japanese authors...not sure why, just a change of narrative voice.
"Phaic Tan" or "Molvania" more likely than LP guides.
Anything with lots of pages for those long waits.
I'm basically bad at choosing myself a book, and prefer when friends pass on something they liked. Something new and completely different always appreciated.
Music you might find me listening to while waiting for my plane
Never travel with recorded music - just don't like carrying it, and like searching for something new and live once there. Otherwise, reconnecting with You Am I's 1995 album "Hourly, Daily" lately; John Lee Hooker, Papa Wemba, Saleef Keita, Crowded House, Toots and the Maytalls, Jose Padilla, Yann Thiersen, Chopin; and here in RSA lesser known Flat Stanley, Mafikizola, Freshly Ground, Oliver Mtukudzi (Zim). Depending on DJ, also like trance or anything remixed with a funk/groove beat. Most Memorable Travel Experience
It's all good!! Let's see...
Setting up a series of "crash pads" in Paris in the early 90's - awesome times - which were an underground hit. Met so many great backpackers then. Taking the Trans-Siberian railroad in 1990, slipping into Macau after overstaying my Chinese visa, then working in a Japanese bar in Hong Kong... in an avante-garde pirate uniform. Some near misses with volcanoes in the Philippines and Nicaragua, and a grumbling one in Tanzania that blew its whole top off last year just 6 days after my trip up. Taking local minibuses from Harare to Zanzibar and back (with some trumped-up jail time in Zambia). Mountain biking around Madagascar for 2 months. The amazing hospitality across Zimbabwe last year. Being swept inland then out to sea by the tsunami at Khao Lak, Thailand, and meeting amazing people afterwards (obviously the biggie in the list). Most of all catching up for big nights out with old friends (Perth this year), or making new ones. Profile
From San Francisco, but only spent 5 of last 20 years there. Lived in Paris, Hong Kong, Oaxaca, Copenhagen, and now Cape Town for past 8 years. Thinking of a move to Perth though... or St. Petersburg?

4 good friends from Cape Town took a quick 2+ weeks to see Zambia's South Luangwa Park, Lake Malawi, and the northern Moz coast.
