How to pay on a bus/tram/ferry etc. Jul 25, 2011
If you want to use public transportation in istanbul, you should get a magnetic ticket. There are several kinds of it, like 1 pass tickets, 6 pass tickets etc. You CANNOT get on a bus if you don't have a ticket. But there are blue buses run by public (not from government) drivers. On those buses you can pay it cash (no pos machines so no credit cards). You can use coins at metro and tram stations and ferry ports. However if you have akbil (akıllı bilet = smart ticket) you can put on some credits on your akbil and pay your fee at the tolls by touching your akbil. You can put on a monthly credit and use all kinds of transportation as much as you want (there is a limit of course, but I bet you can't reach it).

Blue buses do not accept cash anymore. You HAVE TO have a ticket either single ride or multi (istanbulcard).
