Countries I've Traveled To
Languages Spoken
English, French and German (with a huge pile of dictionaries and phrasebooks), embarrassingly not much Spanish although I live 20 minutes from Mexico, some Croatian (like a 3-year old), and some poorly pronounced phrases in Portuguese, Russian, and Japanese. I'm not real good with languages, but I try...

Most Memorable Travel Experience
Left behind on islands that submerge at high tide. More than once. Asking some local fisherman "can you drop me off on your way out, then give me a ride back?" works best if you don't pay up front : )

I'd have to say my favorite was working on Midway Island after the Navy pulled out. There was just a skeleton crew of workers left cleaning it up and I could roam over the whole place with no stupid restrictions and rules. I really liked spending that month on a little speck of sand far from anything.

As a wildlife biologist, so I can usually keep myself occupied anywhere in the world, as long as there are living creatures there to stare at. I like seeing cities too, the way office workers go out to see nature on weekends... My other geeky interests are maps and mapmaking. Fortunately, that's another thing I get to do at work - GIS - electronic mapping and analysis.

I have a problem with traveling in that I can't stop once I get going. It can be walking too far down a beach at low tide, to far up a trail as the sun goes down, or ...not getting back quite when planned when I'm on vacation. Much to my boss's distress.

I'm always happy to give advice on my hometown of San Diego and California, or even show you around if I'm in town. I've really liked meeting people from around the world and made friends traveling, so I'm happy to have this site to keep in touch.
