Like moist travelers you will arrive at the airport without any of the local currency, KYAT (which is pronounced more like jat or jit). There is one bank before you go trough the barrier when leaving the arrival hall. It is on the far left hand side, but i have forgotten the name of it. There is only one and you cannot miss it. The Aussie girl in font of me changed $200 and got two bundles of 1000 kyat notes, and considering $1 = 1250 kyat roughly, she had perhaps 250 or so 1000 kyat notes. i changed $500 and was handed a huge pile but i asked if they had any 5000 or 10,000 notes and the cashier gladly replaced most of my notes with bigger denominations. There was at least one bank after the barrier where non passengers were allowed to stand and i did notice that this bank was giving about 16 kyat less to the dollar. Not a big difference but why not get the best deal available.

When flying out of the country there is a Bago Bank Branch after you reach the Departure Hall where you wait for your flight. Bago Bank will be on the right and will be open 24 hours and you can change your excess kyat there, even without the original receipt.

In the not so distant past the tourist was required to pay for many of his purchases, hotels, train tickets, bus tickets and souvenirs in US Dollars but things have changed. During my whole stay in Myanmar i was asked twice to pay my hotel bill in Dollars. I was not forced to pay in dollars but they asked me kindly if i could oblige them.
