At the bottom of the world, Antarctica is a cold, barren place. About 98 percent of the continent is covered in ice, which really tells you all you need to know about the place.
Home to birds, penguins, seals, whales and a handful of scientific outposts, Antarctica is devoid of a major human influence. Cities and towns are nowhere to be found here, as this place is far too cold most of the year to suitably support much life. There is also no organized political ownership of the land down here, though several countries have bases on the continent and take part in research.Along with the snow-covered peaks, you'll see vistas of barren cliffs, and huge rock outcroppings; sometimes the only reminder that you're in Antarctica are the curious little penguins approaching you and the iceberg-laden water behind you. To travel to Antarctica means going on a cruise ship (usually small, for a hundred or so people) to visit the Peninsula, the ship is your floating hotel. Unless you work in one of the research stations or are trying to go to the South Pole, then you might fly from Christchurch, New Zealand. From the tip of South America, it's more than a days journey on the ship over the infamous Drake Passage. But people who have ventured to the southernmost continent have remarked at the unspoiled beauty and wonder Antarctica provides. An underrated and still not quite discovered travel destination, this is indeed the final frontier on the earth's surface.

Sunrise 03:42, sunset 22:11.Our first glimps of land today, it was Elephant Island in the distance. We also saw our first icebergs. The icebergs in the southern ocean can be really impressive, and lots of them are flat on top, because that's how they fell off the Antarctic continent. Elephant Island is quite famous as far as Antarctica is concerned, because this was where Ernest Shackleton and his men were forced to winter back in 1916, and where he started his incredible 850 mile sailing in ...
