Hey, I am from Trujillo, Peru, and I have been in Lima a few times now. I can tell you that Lima is a BIG city and of course there are lots of people. Just to be in the safe side, always look out for your personal belongins, such as money or cameras, etc. It really depends where in Lima you are gonna be spending time, like almost every major city, you want to hang out in the good areas and stay away from the bad ones. I've never had a problem in Lima before. As for Mancora, I have never been there, but I heard it was really nice. If you go to Cuzco, Im sure you will enjoy that too. If you know some spanish, use it! Currency exchange is about $1USD = about 3.10 soles , so don't let anybody rip you off. Hope this helps, if u need anything else, just ask.
