A smaller reserve, but well placed Jul 30, 2010
We stayed at Zulu Nyala in May 2010 after bidding on a 6 day safari at a charity auction (most of the guests seem to have done the same). Zulu Nyala is a small reserve compared to Phinda or Tembe, only about 2000 acres. The advantage here is that you won't be spending hours looking for animals. There are giraffe, nyala, kudu, wildebeest, rhinos, cheetah, leopard, warthogs, elephants, impala, monkeys, and more. The game guides were wonderful - knowledgeable and outgoing.

The resort itself is very beautiful, set on a hill overlooking the reserve. The open air dining room and lounge have high cathedral ceilings and a thatched roof. Food is buffet style with 4-5 choices every day, along with soup, lots of veggies, salad and fruit. Wine is local and inexpensive and good! Not gourmet fare but good, along with a game choice every night. Staff is generally very friendly.

Since ZN is too small to support lions and more than 3-4 elephants, side trips are available to Phinda Game Park and the Tembe Elephant Park. There is also a trip to a local village and school, which I highly recommend.

Zulu Nyala seems to be going thru an update of their accommodations - some of the rooms were absolutely gorgeous while others were sadly in need of an update. If you go, ask for a room on the pool. The views are wonderful and the rooms are newer. Our room did not have a clock, phone or TV but we saw that some of the new rooms had flat screen TVs.

This is a game lodge, there are animals on the grounds and an occasional lizard in the room. Rooms with thatched ceilings/roofs may have a bat. This is Africa after all.

We rented a car and drove from the airport and the driving directions are very good. My advice - drive in the daylight. Driving is on the left and people use the breakdown lane as a sidewalk. We used the car one day to drive to the St. Lucia Estuary to take a boat tour and see hippos.

All in all, we loved Zulu Nyala.
