Zoola San Pedro La Laguna Reviews
Zoola Hostel Dec 21, 2012
Zoola looked like really nice hostel and we really wanted to get there all together, but they did not have space for five people. We came in the late afternoon anyway and did not expect much, so reservations for next day did the trick and we went to the next place for overnight relaxation.
Next day we came back left our stuff and went for an adventure. Entrance to Zoola hostel is not that easy to find. If you follow the road, you’ll have to circle around a bit, but there are many passages between the buildings that make your path much shorter. Path that leads to the entrance is covered with wooden planks that have large spaces in between, so if you have bag with wheals, that is not going to be an pleasant experience… Weird thing at the entrance is the gate, which is made for people 5ft (150cm) or smaller. It is ridiculous to band over every time you want to get in the hostel… must be some pagan ritual that I am not aware of, or it is protection from large invaders…
This hostel is owned by Israelis and huge majority (probably 80%) of the people staying there where from Israel. Restaurant menu has many dishes that are some kind of Middle Eastern variation on classics and local food. Everything I tried from the menu was very tasty and well made. In the morning you can have gratis coffee, strong, flavorful, and probably made from the local beans.
Dorm had 5 or 6 single beds, I don’t really remember, and the beds were placed over concrete shells that become a bit moldy and stale. Lift your bed before taking it and see if there is something inside… There are no lockers, and that was an issue for me. You will leave your passport with the reception and they give it back when you leave, and that is another thing I don’t like.
The best thing about this hostel is common areas and the pool area. Under large tent, there are niches with lots and lots of pillows and small tables where you can eat or play games. Very cozy, ideal to meet people and super for relaxation… Other area that stands out is pool and a bar area that is at very end of the property. From the pool deck you’ll have beautiful views of the lake at any time of the day. All around the deck are big black pillows that make you fall asleep no matter how hard you fight (and why should you fight in the first place). Bar is well equipped and they do have bunch of specials and happy hours at all the times.
Property is very weird, and to get to the bottom area (closer to the lake) you’ll have to cross the wooden bridge that is a pass over the small path that divides the lots. Bathrooms and showers are excellent and there are few of them available everywhere you go. There is also a TV/internet room (for people that don’t have their own computer) with lots and lots of DVD-s. Unfortunately most of this DVDs are kind of destroyed, and you’ll be able to see only part of the movie or whatever you are watching.
Price for a dorm room is 35Q which is super cheap, but actually it is on the higher end than other hostels and hotels in the area. You can get room from 25Q and up in this little town, but probably because it was a low season when I was there.
I loved this area, hostel was very good and I would probably go there again.
