Zoo Huachipa Reviews
Amazing Zoo in the middel of nowhere Jun 20, 2011
We where in Lima and intended to visit a couple of Zoos in Lima. One of the places we found on the internet was located in Huachipa. So we first went to the Plaza de armas in Lima for some food before catching a taxi to Huachipa.
Once we got a taxi we asked the driver the cost for driving us to Huachipa. It was obvious that the driver had second thoughts about driving us there. As the taxi driver was about to give us a price we were interrupted by a officer from the tourist police who wanted to know if we had a problem. We told him we just wanted to go to Huachipa Zoo...
The police officer just looked bewildered at us and stuttered: "Huachipa? Why you want to go to Huachipa? Huachipa not nice!"
We told him that we wanted to visit the Zoo there as we had already been to the Zoo in Lima.
The officer then turned to his two colleagues and started talking. He then turned to the taxi driver and told him to drive off without us and told us he would make sure we had a safe ride to Huachipa as taxis were not safe to Huachipa.
After 10 minutes a white car turned up. The driver was the police officers brother and he would take us back and forth to the Zoo almost free of charge.
He took us out of Lima and we ended up in between the middle of nowhere and some pretty bad slum areas.
Once at the Zoo I understood what the officer was talking about. If you're stupid enough to take a taxi out here without the driver waiting for you until you want to go home you're pretty much in trouble as it's in the middle of a pretty poor area with high crime rate. Luckily our driver was told by his brother to follow us in to the zoo and drive us back so we had no problems. And the Zoo was absolutely worth it. It was much better than the Zoo in Lima and we were the only tourist there. I can highly recommend this place. Just make sure you have a driver back home otherwise you'll regret it....
