Apr 23, 2006Well, if you are interested in human history, anthropology, archeology you should be interested in visiting the site of the Peking Man dig and museum. It is in the town of Zhoukoudian, about 50km southwest of Beijing. This is where in the early 20th century, skulls and other bones of humans living here more than 20000 years ago were found. They were named "Peking Man" for the obvious reasons. These people already knew how to use fire, and they also used tools (a needle made with bone was found here, and shown in the museum on site). The museum is not very big, but had good exhibits. A topological model of the site, so you know what's where. Many exhibits about the people who did the digging (a Swede no less was the key person), the tools they used, photos of the dig at the time. Assembled skeletons of the animils found (a tiger, a hyena among them), of course bones of the Peking Man (replicas, however, the real ones are in a museum in Beijing), remains of ashes and a fire pit, many bones of birds and other mammals, and even fish fossils. And you can take a walk around the various dig sites nearby, which are no longer being excavated. I thought it was just so neat to be able to visit a place I was taught about in grade school. I would suggest spending 1.5-2 hours here including the walk around the digs. Part of the China old civilizations tour 2006 travel blog |
