Zenith Hostel London Reviews
almost as dodgey as it is cheap Mar 09, 2012
The Zenith Hostel is not for the faint of heart, but for a traveler with few standards and fewer dollars, it gets the job done.
To start on a high note: the people are friendly, the linens are clean, there´s hot water, laundry, 24-hour entry, lockers available, in a convenient location to wherever you want to visit, and it´ll cost you just under 7 pounds a night. This has got to be one of the cheapest, if not THE cheapest, for hostels in London. That being said though, you get what you pay for.
The place is kind of a dump, to put it gently. The rooms themselves are decent, but the kitchen isn´t much for cleanliness, and nor is the bathroom (by "isn´t much" I really mean "isn´t at all"). You´ll probably need another wash after your first in the rather grimy (and laughably tiny) shower. Also, be prepared to have to decode the complex puzzle that is the showering mechanism (the knob doesn´t line up to its results).
Be warned that the advertised "English Breakfast" is actually Kellogg´s Corn Flakes. If you don´t intend to eat breakfast there, or if you like corn flakes, then I suppose that would be fine.
The hostel is above a little dive-bar, so get ready for some noise. Also, the kitchen tends to turn into party central long into the wee hours, not especially depending on the day of the week.
I found it kind of strange that some people actually LIVE at this hostel - meaning not because they´re travelers but because rent in London is pricey. I found some of the "permanents" to be incredibly kind, and some of them to be rather antisocial and/or rough-around-the-edges. Also, get ready for a ratio of men to women that´s about 5 to 1. I was the only female in a room of 6 beds.. which was fine, but a little unexpected and somewhat awkward.
All in all, the Zenith met my needs, but I´m a simple girl. If you are expecting any extras, or even are anything of a germophobe, then I definitely would not recommend it.
