... for the 'tapas' lovers ... Jul 27, 2011
Zaytinya is located on the corner of 9th and G-street in Washington,DC-Chinatown area. (Should I say NW? =))

It's a fusion restaurant as a mixture of Turkish/Greek/Lebanese dishes, and the atmosphere is cool, stylish and classy. However, the owner (and even the chefs) is not from one of those countries I mentioned above, he is Spanish: Jose Andres. He is also the owner of another restaurant in DC, called 'Jaleo'.

There is no regular portions in this restaurant, and they serve their dishes as tapas size and style. "Meze" is the Turkish word for Tapas, which you can see on the menu.

The waiter/waitress recommends you 3 plates, but it is up to you and your level of hunger, of course. They also bring olive oil and freshly baked bread as appetizer while you're waiting for your order.

I ordered Adana Kebab (spicy Turkish sausage/kebab) and Ottoman Rice Pilaf (which was very interesting to try).

I think prices are a bit high, however the place is cool and I recommend this if you're a couple or a group.

Hooray-nice review...yeah, this place has its pluses and minuses, but often has a nice crowd; and yes, you have to say NW :)

Greek, Lebanese, and Turkish food with a decent happy hour Jun 28, 2010
If you want to visit Zaytinya for happy hour, get there early because the bar fills up fast and standing is not often much fun. The happy hour drinks are OK, but I opted to pay full price for a wine I liked, but the crowd is nice and trendy. My friends and I ordered appetizers and they were a lot smaller than we thought so that was diappointing. If you order a bunch of appetizers, you bill might be a little high.

If you go for dinner, you must, must, must make reservations. Once 4, 5, or 6pm comes around, no one can really walk in and expect to get a table with less than an hour's wait. I had made 3 attempts to go there for dinner and can give you the "reservation speech" based on experience.

It's a pretty restaurant and if you want to eat outside, for the most part, the sun is blocked by the Martin Luther King Jr library and you should be in the shade by the time dinner time comes around; I don't know what the sun factor is in the middle of the day.

It's just a block from the Verizon center, so be ready to valet your car or hunt for a parking space that you will have to pump with quarters. If you take the metro to Chinatown and get out on the 9th street side, you will be right across the street from it.
