Zaragoza is the capital of the province of Aragon and the fifth largest city in Spain. It was founded by the Romans and is mainly industrial thesedays.
The heart and highlight of the city is the huge Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Pilar, between the Ebro River and the main square, Plaza del Pilar. There is another cathedral at the south-east end of the Plaza: La Seo. The Aljafería Palace is the third major attraction. The city hosts the 9-day religious festival "Las Fiestas del Pilar" on 12 October.
The city was rejuvinated when it hosted the 2008 World Expo.
Zaragoza is a common stop, being about 300 km from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao and Toulouse.
If you plan to ride by bus from Madrid to Barcelona or vice versa, stop over at Zaragoza. Zaragoza is sort-of in the middle between these two huge cities. Is it nice to rest for a night or two to see some interesting castle and architecture that are part of the history of Espanola.
