Arriving to Zanzibar
posted by:

Today got quite nasty! Things until now went quite well, but when something goes wrong…. Disaster! I woke up at 7:30am today, quite late if you consider that I have been getting up at 6am almost every day. I put on my bathing suit and went to the beach to do some jogging! Today I ran for almost 50 minutes! Impressed? Well right now I don´t feel my legs! ;) After my sport session I prepared all my luggage an went for breakfast. Our shuttle did not come to pick us up until 1pm, so I took my...

That sums up the last few days here on the island of Zanzibar.  We literally worked our way through a bottle of Jamaican rum while lazing in the shade reading books.  We headed up to Nungwi (northern beach area) after a few nights in Stone Town.  Our hotel looked right out onto the ocean and you merely had to stumble a few steps to find a perfect spot for the day.  We swam in the Indian ocean and watched the dhows come in and out.  We also have had the best seafood he...

The islands of Zanzibar and Mafia are beautiful and intriguing, however they do not even compare to the wonders that you will find when you actually get into the sea.   The Snorkeling here is some of the best I have ever seen and I got to swim with Dolphins too.   My trip started with a flight into Dar es Salaam, which turned out to be a hot steamy airport with no air con. The airline also managed to mislay my fishing rod, so after queuing for immigration and my luggage I now j...

First impressions of Zanzibar

My last day on this gorgeous island was far too short. I spent the entire morning worrying about making it back to Dar Es Salaam in time to get on my 9am flight from Dar to Heathrow and drove everyone mad in the process. In this part of the world, I neither felt comfortable nor did I see it necessary to rush people or insist on my way. I really felt that a laid back, generous manner would leave an imprint in people's memories that would allow them the independance to do things correctly. I re...

Zanzibar is one of the prettiest places I've visited.  The beaches are beautiful and the architecture is a feast for the eyes.  There are attempts being made to restore a lot of old buildings, but unfortunately there is a lot of modern ugly construction coming up as well. Its not the most convenient to get to Zanzibar.  Your best bet is to fly in from Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, Mombasa or a few other African destinations.  There are a few direct flights from outside Afr...

I did a 4 week overland trip in Africa. from niarobi to Victoria Falls! It was so good, we went through tanzania, stopping at Zanzibar. I did a side trip and went to the serengetti and Ngorongoro crater. then went through Malawi, Mozambique, & Zimbabwe. I had no problems in any of the countries, met some awesome people on the truck. walked with lions, saw cheetahs kill a gazelle and did a bungee jump!

After climbing and freezing atop Mt. Kilimanjaro and seeing the amazing wildlife roam and getting chased by an angry hippo on a safari, complete your most challenging leg of the "Tanzanian Triathalon" at Zanzibar basking in the warm clear water and living it up with newly forged friendship at the local drinking hole.

Zanzibar Island

...and so to Zanzibar! Four nights on this tropical island which, as Denise accurately stated, is like diving into a postcard! We took a VERY slow drive that morning to catch the ferry (we had to cross a small estree of water on a mini ferry first, which was rather scary at boarding time when the 2000+ foot passengers pushed and crushed themselves to ensure a place on the boat, paying no attention to the small children and women carrying babies as they thought only of themselves in the mad ...

In 2006 we spent 4 weeks in Tanzania. We did a 6 day safari and visited Tarangire NP, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara NP. Especially Serengeti en Ngorongoro were amazing! Furthermore we spent some time in Arusha, where we did a Cultural Tourism Walk (see my review), Lushoto in the Usambara mountains, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.

After two months in Africa that included the intense and strenuous summiting of Mt. Kilimanjaro, there is no better way to finish and leave the continent than to chill out on the spicy island of Zanzibar.  There is no place on earth where the water is so blue that it becomes light green - and so light green that it appears white.  The beach water appears white.  AND, there might be no other place on earth where the tide turns so drastically.  At ...

The six of us went to Zanzibar for 'holiday' as they call it.  It was amazing!!  It was made possible by a cheap train fare - which was cut in half when they gave us a student discount.  We were excited until we got to Tanzania - a three day train ride later - and they wouldn't let us through the gate without specific student IDs that we did not have.  We eventually got through though, after having missed the last ferry to the island, and the plane that we'd arranged for h...

Where does one escape the madness of "the rat race" to recalibrate one's soul, to find laughter once again, to dance with impunity, and to find joy in the simple essence of life? Florianopolis is every bit beautiful as the name itself and along with the hospitality of the islanders, your heart is easily lost here perhaps to be reclaimed, maybe, on your next visit.
