A tranquil hotel in the historic medina of Marrakech Mar 25, 2012
Riad hotels are in fact large Moroccan town-houses, not new-build hotels, so the Riad Zamzam is part of the fabric of the historic, but living medina, where ordinary Moroccans coexist with craftsmen, traders and tourists. There is a certain hustle and bustle in the narrow streets of the medina, where workshops open out onto the street and bicycles, mopeds and pedestrians intermingle.

Inside the Riad Zamzam, I was struck by the elegant Moroccan interior decor, with its patterned tiled floors, smooth plaster walls, Moorish arches and sumptuous drapery. The atmosphere inside Zamzam is just incredibly peaceful, punctuated only by the occasional chirp of a small bird. It's nice to have breakfast at the foot of the massive palm tree which arcs up towards the sky from within the courtyard, where it stays cool throughout the heat of the day.

This is exactly the sort of tranquil space you want to return to after a day spent shopping in the souk, or exploring the various cultural sites of the medina, all of which are within walking distance of the riad. The reception organises taxis to get you to and from Zamzam if you are going out somewhere else in the city, or to and from the airport or station. Various excursions and guided tours are possible, and I encourage you to take advantage of whatever is recommended. I particularly enjoyed the guided tour of the Medina and a day trip to the Atlas Mountains. You can also get a traditional hamam, which is a kind of seated all-over body scrub with warm water and a relaxing massage. There's a roof terrace, with a fantastic view of the mountains on clear days. It looks faintly other-wordly when you see the moon in a clear blue sky with these white snow-capped peaks as a backdrop. You can sit out on the terrace and sunbathe, or have a snack or a drink prepared by the chef, who runs Moroccan cookery courses for anyone who enjoys that sort of thing.

At this hotel, the staff take every care to look after you during your stay. English and French are spoken by the concierge, at the reception and by the owners, who are English. I must say, I really enjoyed staying at the hotel and my expectations were exceeded in every way.
