Rich Art nouveau style restaurant with an history to tell Apr 28, 2012
This building wouldn´t stand out next to a Paris metro entrance. The Art Nouveau style or Jugendstil is present in the whole of the building and overlooking the Van Brienenoord bridge it´s a spectacular place to eat. I love to take you back to 1875, where this story of the Zalmhuis starts. In that particular year Dutchman Dekkers builds a salmon market across the street of a tavern called Zalmhuys where a pavilion is set on a piece of land. He already owned the tavern. And his new endevour, the market, grows out to be the biggest in the Netherlands in the old days. Extended with a newer pavilion in the Art nouveau era Rotterdammers rode the tram to Honingerdijk on sundays and walked from there to the Zalmhuis where they ended their trip with a salmon meal. Fresher wasn't possible and what better way than eat this fish than in your sunday's clothes :-) But soon, just after 1900, the salmon population rapidly declined. The watersnoodramp in 1953 (worst flooding the Netherlands ever had), the industrialization, the construction of the Van Briendenoord bridge made an end to the Zalmhuis. It was pulled down in 1955. But it's recently rebuild and at the grant opening in 2002 Minister Zalm(!) of Finance, did the honours of declaring it REopened. Who better to ask than the namesake of the former market and tavern :-) Ray Kentie, an architect from Amsterdam, was responsible for giving the Zalmhuis back it's former greatness along with the help of old picture and newspaper collections! Look at the old picture to mach it with my own. Kentie is specialized in rebuilding old monuments. And it seems to us he's done a fine job with this old salmon market. We had a wine tasting here and were surprised to find ourselves in a place packed with history. Remade or not you will feel like you're in a different era. We will go back soon for dinner. There will be a lot of salmon on the menu that evening :-).
