Iconic Oct 18, 2011
Located in the Kaptol area of Zagreb, the cathedral is definitely amongst the most iconic of buildings that grace the city, and you can never seem to escape its view when you are wandering around the city. Though the building dates from the eleventh century, there is very little trace of its ancient origins, notwithstanding the ancient fresco that still hangs on for dear life at the right hand side of the main altar. Due to earthquake damage, much of the cathedral was rebuilt in the nineteenth century. The result was a very gothic looking building, and the towers seem a little strange above the top. However, these served an important political purpose too, as a lookout for the threat of Ottoman invasion.

The cathedral is very nicely decorated and though there aren’t that many pretty chapels here, it’s still a very nice visit indeed. Whatever time of day you come, the cathedral receives a regular visit from swathes of tourists groups. The beatified figure that graces the main altar area is quite a feature too. The current pope recently came to pray by the monument, as did his predecessor (who actually beatified him). At normal times of the year however, the monument still receives great amounts of attention from devout worshippers. Beneath the ground floor, I understand that there is a crypt which contains the remains of the key clergymen that were historically associated with the cathedral.

A very nice cathedral indeed and well worth a visit.
