Yulia's Iboih Reviews
Basic but stunning location Jan 25, 2013
I've given a few below average ratings for this place given the basic nature of the accommodation itself but I have to give it an overall rating of recommended due to the stunning location.
Yulia's was recommended in lonely planet as being the best of the basic bunch. It's about a ten minute walk up a path through the jungle. Along the path is a range of bungalow style accommodation. It's a bit strenuous in the heat with a 15kg backpack but when you're free of your luggage you won't mind the walk. It's worth it when you see what's waiting for you at the end. Take a torch when walking the path at night as there is no light.
Yulia's as a range of shared and private bungalow style huts. The most expensive are the private huts that sit over the crystal blue water of the Indian Ocean. We stayed in one of these. They are extremely basic. The bed is creaky and the bathroom rather dirty. There is no air-conditioning, only a ceiling fan and no television. However, there is a large balcony with a sunbed and a hammock for relaxing in whilst you take in the view which was worth the measly 15 AUD per night.
The accommodation includes a pretty good restaurant and bar, however the food can be hit and miss and can sometimes take an extremely long time to come out. This happens all over the island and we worked out that they have a particular style of cooking which involves making everything from scratch. There are lots of cats lurking about waiting to get hold of the left overs on your plate. Whilst in the Aceh province alcohol is banned, they do sell beer at all the restaurants at Iboih Beach.
The hotel also has a little shop where you get get extra toilet paper, bottles of water and other drinks, snacks, linen, towels etc. We hired a motorbike for the day for about 8 AUD and they also have snorkelling equipment for hire as well. They have a great outdoor area with sunbeds and you can literally jump straight into the water and snorkel. The water is so clear and blue.
Service could have been better. Whilst the staff was there to help with anything you may need, it was just very very slow. Slow to get drinks and slow to get food. Some nights we waited up to an hour for dinner but it seemed that was not just at Yulia's but everywhere on Iboih beach. It's just something you need to consider and order maybe an hour before you think you'll need to eat.
