We went to Ypres (Ieper), Belgium to explore the battlefields in and around Ypres. Actually we've been there now several times, not just because of the history there, but also because it's one of the most beautiful towns here in Belgium. If you are a history lover, you'll enjoy the opportunity to either take a guided tour, which is best to do if you don't have small children with you, because if they make noise and disturb the other tourists, the tour guides might ask...

As a young member of my country i feel it is my duty to remember those who gave their lives to protect the way of live we all now and should enjoy. With my wife and i looking into our family history our links to the past have become very real. One such family member that of my wife's great granddad was killed in the trenches of the first world war. As a family we travelled to Belgium to remember him.

It was my first time in Ypres (and indeed Belgium), and the town itself it beautiful in a picture postcard kind of way. It's all the more amazing when you learn that the whole thing was re-built to the original plans after the war, when it had been involved in several key battles to secure the route to France and Calais.The Menin Gate was jaw dropping.
